The Saw franchise is now in the hands of Blumhouse, bringing franchise creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell back for the eleventh installment.
The contemporary horror masters have recently gone on record with promises to steer this IP back to its roots, even prompting unconfirmed speculation that they may return to direct at the Q&A for the special legacy screening of their breakout 2004 hit at the Sundance Film Festival this week.
While at Park City for the film’s screening, Wan and Whannell spoke to Bloody Disgusting’s Matt Donato about their involvement in the upcoming eleventh installment.
The pair have previously said to expect something completely different with the new film, but what exactly does that mean? Those worried it’ll follow spinoff Spiral: From the Book of Saw and bypass any involvement with Jigsaw or his complicated legacy, fret not: Wan puts those concerns to bed straightaway.
“Well, I can tell you this,” Wan says. “It’s definitely not Spiral, it’s not Spiral. And I still blame Leigh for killing off Jigsaw, because it’s fucking hard to try and make any future Saw movies without Jigsaw.”
“He did have cancer, by the way,” Whannell interjects.
Wan concedes, “That is true. That is true. This is what I’ll say. Leigh and I, we’re not going to give too much away, but we don’t think you can make a Saw movie without Jigsaw. That’s the bottom line. And ultimately, we want to hark back to the spirit, what Leigh and I love about the original first movie. The original first movie, which is Jigsaw’s philosophy and what makes him tick.
“Ultimately, he’s a scary guy in the first one, and we want to go back to making a scary Saw movie again, with this omnipresent thing that Jigsaw had in the first film.
“But so it’s a really kind of like dig into that. And definitely we want to give the fans what they love about the whole franchise as well, whilst I think it’s very important we want to do something new and fresh that hasn’t been done before. That’s the sale. That’s my pitch.”
Stay tuned for more from our chat with Wan and Whannell.

Ethan Hawke (The Black Phone) and Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings) will star in the jungle thriller The Last of the Tribe, Variety reports.
Claudio Borrelli is directing from a script by Mark Bailey (Downfall: The Case Against Boeing), based on investigative journalist Monte Reel‘s 2010 novel.
Set in the Amazon rainforest, the film follows William Phelan (Hawke), a washed-out Chicago cop turned corporate gun-for-hire, who is sent to investigate a death. During his mission, he encounters the last surviving member of an Indigenous tribe.
Indigenous Brazilian activist Zaya Guarani will also star.
Academy Award winner Edward Saxon (The Silence of the Lambs) is producing alongside Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz for Chockstone Pictures, Mark Bailey, and Ethan and Ryan Hawke. O2 Filmes’ Fernando Meirelles (City of God) serves as executive producer.
Protagonist Pictures is launching sales ahead of the European Film Market in Berlin next month.
“I’m drawn to films that slam the raw, the rugged, and the cruel head-on into the beautiful and the divine,” commented Borrelli. “In this story, the rainforest is both the villain and the savior — that natural and forever conflict is the essence of what I want to capture in The Last of the Tribe.”
“The Last of the Tribe is a tense, gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller, a real old-school heart pounding ride. And yet, it is also about something that could not be more timely – the destruction of the rainforest and the people who call it home,” said the producers. “Our fantastic cast, spearheaded by the extraordinary Ethan Hawke and now joined by Bloom, are all so smart, and passionate, and talented and committed to the telling of this story. We are thrilled,”
“The Last of the Tribe is an intense, propulsive thriller with real moral weight at its core,” added Protagonist CEO Dave Bishop. “Set deep in the Brazilian Amazon, the project pairs elevated genre storytelling with urgent contemporary themes. Claudio has crafted a bold vision, and with Ethan Hawke, Orlando Bloom, and Zaya Guarani leading the cast, we’re excited to introduce this standout project to buyers at EFM.”

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 added Tigger to the Poohniverse, but the fan favorite character is getting a makeover for Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 3.
New concept art by special effects artist Vlad Taupes below previews Tigger’s new look in the upcoming sequel.
The latest installment in the Twisted Chuildhood Universe is scheduled to enter production in May from Jagged Edge Productions.
Jagged Edge’s Scott Chambers, who produced the first two Blood and Honey films and helmed the recent Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, will take over directing duties from Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who will produce.
Richard Stanley (Color Out of Space, Hardware) wrote the script, which will introduce additional Winnie-the-Pooh characters, including Rabbit, the heffalumps, and the woozles.
Pooh and Piglet were slaughtered, their reign of terror buried deep in the dirt. But something in Hundred Acre Wood refuses to stay dead. The massacre has only just begun. They are coming — bigger, deadlier, and hungrier.
Lewis Santer will reprise the role of Tigger along with Eddy MacKenzie as Piglet and Marcus Massey as Owl. They’ll be joined by newcomers George Drogo as Winnie-the-Pooh and Karol Stanisz as Rabbit.
The cast also includes Shayli Reagan, Lauren Staerck, FiFi Anicah, Zena Donnelly, Kira Reed Lorsch, Belle Taylor, Jon Callaway, Fyn Phoenix, Paul Black, Leo Harris, and Stanley.
Blood and Honey 3 will be followed by the crossover film Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble, slated to shoot this summer.
