The latest adaptation of a classic Stephen King tale, director Francis Lawrence’s The Long Walk was released into theaters this past weekend, armed with a 90% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and many critics calling it one of the all-time best King adaptations.
How did the film fare at the box office? The Long Walk opened in the #4 spot on the U.S. box office charts for the weekend, with heavy hitters including Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle, The Conjuring: Last Rites, and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale eating into its profits. The Long Walk opened to $11.5 million across 2,845 theaters in the United States.
The Long Walk has a reported production budget of around $20 million, so it’ll need to have legs in the coming weeks in order to ultimately be profitable at the box office for Lionsgate.
The film opened a little bit higher than films including Wolf Man ($10.8 million) and M3GAN 2.0 ($10.2 million) earlier this year, but lower than films including I Know What You Did Last Summer ($12.7 million) and The Monkey ($14 million), with 28 Years Later ($30 million), Weapons ($43.5 million), Sinners ($48 million), Final Destination Bloodlines ($51.6 million), and The Conjuring: Last Rites ($84 million) demolishing them all in opening weekend totals.
The Monkey, it’s worth noting, was also a Stephen King adaptation, with Lionsgate no doubt hoping that The Long Walk would best that film’s opening weekend. Alas, The Long Walk isn’t off to the strongest start at the box office after just a few days. Stay tuned for updates.
The story follows Raymond Garraty, a 16-year old who takes part in an annual contest in which 100 teens must journey, nonstop and under strict rules, until only one is left alive.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Despite an unwavering eye on the dour and ruthless death march and all its grotesqueries, it’s the pervading camaraderie and heart, as well as a tremendous cast, that solidifies this as one of the best King adaptations yet.”
