The Popcorn Frights Film Festival is back with its eleventh this year, both in-person and virtually, from August 7-17. The Southeast’s largest genre celebration announces its second wave of programming this morning, from new premieres to repertory screening classics.
The final wave is a short film showcase, featuring seventy-four world premiere shorts. Look for notable entries including Andrew Bowser’s “Frankenbabes from Beyond the Grave” and Academy Award-winner Joel Harlow’s “The Specter of Christmas” featuring Paul Giamatti.

Hawkeye season 2 seemed like it was doomed after Jeremy Renner publicly criticized Marvel over his salary negotiations, but there may yet be hope after all.
The Simpsons has gone on way longer than creator Matt Groening ever imagined it would, and it will only continue to run so long as one thing remains true.
Korean director Na Hong-Jin (The Wailing) will make his much-anticipated return with Hope, and Variety reports that the sci-fi action thriller with an A-list ensemble is eyeing a 2026 release.
Hope, now in post-production, is slated for a summer 2026 release.
The cast includes Hwang Jung-min (The Wailing), Zo In-sung (Moving), Hoyeon (“Squid Game”), Michael Fassbender (Alien: Covenant, Prometheus), Alicia Vikander (The Green Knight, Ex Machina), Taylor Russell (Bones and All), and Cameron Britton (“The Umbrella Academy,” “Mindhunter”).
The ambitious thriller is set in “the remote village of Hope Harbor, near the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). When a tiger is suspected to have appeared and local police chief Bum-seok is alerted, it throws the community into chaos. But what begins as a local emergency soon spirals into a deeper, more terrifying mystery, one that forces the town’s residents to confront the unknown.
“Hwang will play Bum-seok, while Zo co-stars as Sung-ki, a headstrong local who tracks a dangerous creature into the forest. Making her feature film debut, Hoyeon plays Sung-ae, a principled rookie officer navigating a crisis beyond her training. Meanwhile, Fassbender, Vikander, Russell, and Britton appear as extraterrestrials whose arrival in Hope Harbor accelerates the town’s unraveling and deepens the mystery.”
Hong Kyung-pyo (The Wailing, Parasite) is on board as cinematographer.
Na Hong-Jin previously said in a statement, “Oftentimes, a person’s goodwill can lead to unintended catastrophe simply because of differences in perspective. My hope for this film is to cinematically capture that phenomenon in a way that has yet to be seen.”

Fear Cabin: The Last Weekend of Summer will be released on DVD on August 12 before hitting Digital on August 29 via Cleopatra Entertainment.

Six friends head into the woods for one last summer weekend, envisioning carefree days by a crystal-clear lake and laughter-filled nights around a secluded cabin. Instead, they stumble upon unsettling rituals that awaken malevolent forces hidden beneath creaking floorboards and moonlit shadows.
Suddenly, their lighthearted getaway becomes a desperate fight for survival, where demonic presences are determined to keep them there forever.

Zach Cregger’s (Barbarian) new horror movie Weapons currently has a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes with eleven positive reviews giving it a 100% Fresh score at this time, and while that will likely change as more reviews are added, the good news here is that critics are absolutely loving Cregger’s latest nightmare. In celebration, WB has released a terrifying new clip.
The most striking image from the film’s official trailer showed Benedict Wong’s character with nightmarishly bulging eyes, and that was a brief snippet from a full scene that Warner Bros. has unleashed this week. It can be seen as something of a spoiler – and it’s tagged as such by WB – but it’s a terrifying glimpse at the upcoming Weapons that’s hard not to watch.
This particularly freaky scene is also pretty hard to UN-see…
Weapons has been compared to PTA’s Magnolia and described as an epic tale that’s both unconventionally structured and “really fucked up” (Cregger’s own words).
