The Strangers are back in two more months with the theatrical release of The Strangers: Chapter 2, director Renny Harlin’s follow-up movie to The Strangers: Chapter 1.

Just over one year after The Strangers: Chapter 1 kickstarted a new trilogy of terror tales, Lionsgate is getting set to unleash The Strangers: Chapter 2 in theaters on September 26.

Here’s the official synopsis: “The Strangers are back – more brutal and relentless than ever. When they learn that one of their victims, Maya (Madelaine Petsch), is still alive, they return to finish what they’ve started. With nowhere to run and no one to trust, Maya must survive another horrific chapter of terror as The Strangers – driven by a senseless, unceasing purpose – pursue her, more than willing to kill anyone who stands in their way.”

Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, Deep Blue Sea) directed both Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, as well as the upcoming The Strangers: Chapter 3.

Gabriel Basso and Ema Horvath also star in The Strangers: Chapter 2. Alan R. Cohen & Alan Freedland wrote the sequel’s screenplay, with producers including Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Alastair Burlingham, and Charlie Dombek.

Production has begun this week on Buddy, a unique horror movie from Too Many Cooks and Adult Swim Yule Log director Casper Kelly.

Emmy-nominated actor Cristin Milioti (“The Penguin”) is attached to star, THR reports.

Naturally, plot details are being kept under wraps at this time, but it’s described as a “new experience in horror.” Kelly co-wrote the script with Jamie King, who previously worked on the Disney+ family movie World’s Best. Considering Kelly’s attachment, it feels safe to assume that Buddy will live up to its “unique” descriptor.

In addition to the mind-bending Adult Swim short “Too Many Cooks” and increasingly wild Yule Log and its sequel, Kelly also contributed the unforgettable “Cheddar Goblin” commercial inserted in Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy.

Milioti earned an Emmy nomination for playing Sofia Falcone in the DC series “The Penguin,” has appeared in “Black Mirror,” and is currently in talks to star in A24 horror movie The Backrooms.

J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules are producing Buddy via their BoulderLight Pictures, the banner behind this year’s Companion and upcoming Weapons. Tyler Davidson and Drew Sykes are producing for Low Spark Films.

We have no idea what Buddy is exactly, but with Kelly, Milioti, and BoulgerLight attached, that makes this project one to watch.

Discovery’s annual “Shark Week” is now officially underway, and the horror genre is getting in on the feeding frenzy with the at-home premiere of Sean Byrne’s Dangerous Animals today.

One of Bloody Disgusting’s 10 best horror movies released in the first half of 2025, Dangerous Animals is now available for Digital purchase for $24.99 or at-home rental for $19.99.

It’s the only new shark attack movie that’s actually being released during “Shark Week” this year, but many more shark-themed horror movies are swimming our way very soon.

Here are 10 upcoming shark horror movies to keep an eye out for!

Deep Water

Renny Harlin (Deep Blue Sea) returns to shark infested waters with Deep Water, an action thriller that will receive a wide theatrical release later this year from Magenta Light Studios.

The film follows an eclectic group of international passengers whose plane, en route from L.A. to Shanghai, is forced to make an emergency landing in shark-infested waters.

The terrified group is forced to work together and overcome their differences if they hope to escape their sinking plane and the frenzy of sharks drawn to the wreckage.

Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley star with Molly Wright (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever), Angus Sampson (Insidious), Kelly Gale (Plane), and Li Wenhan from K-Pop group UNIQ.

Breathe Deep

Late Night with the Devil breakout Ingrid Torelli, “The Haunting of Hill House” star Michiel Huisman, and TikTok influencer Avani Gregg will star in Breathe Deep.

The film is described as a survival thriller set in the world of social media… with sharks.

“13 years after witnessing her father’s death by a shark in the Devil’s Triangle, exploration influencer Addy Frost returns to the fateful site wearing a replica of his vintage diving suit, only to face a deadly battle against a great white shark, a mysterious killer, and her own fears.”

Principal photography takes place this summer on the Mediterranean Sea with James Kermack (Knuckledust) directing from a script he co-wrote with G.D. Wright.

Under Paris 2

‘Under Paris’ (2024)

Netflix had a hit on their hands last year with the French creature feature Under Paris, and director Xavier Gens and star Bérénice Bejo will both be back in sequel Under Paris 2.

Under Paris broke records as one of the most watched non-English language films on Netflix with more than 100 million views, and the ending offered an intriguing hook for continuation.

Bejo’s grieving activist character will return, alongside Nassim Lyes (“Mayhem!”) as the empathetic cop who survived the first film. Production kicks off late this year or early 2026.

The Bay

Francesca Eastwood (M.F.A., Clawfoot) will star in The Bay, which will notably feature an animatronic shark being created by SFX and animatronics company Bischoff’s.

In the film, “Emma (Eastwood) and Lani (Dani Oliveros) head to Thailand, where they are invited on an eco-boat tour to visit a remote shark sanctuary bay – an awe-inspiring lagoon where imposing, steep-sided rock formations called ‘karsts’ rise from the water line – with the hope of seeing the magnificent tiger sharks who have made the secluded spot their home.”

“In the hands of their captain, Mandal (Alexander Wraith), and his rough and ready boatman Ruhan (Tai’mua), the young women are entranced by the beauty of this secret paradise,” the official synopsis further details the project being directed by Phil Volken. “When a giant female shark, nicknamed Sheena, gets tangled in the bait chain while ramming the motor in an attempt to escape, the two friends end up much closer to nature than they bargained for.

“Isolated, hemmed in by the imposing landscape, and now fast sinking, with space for only one person on their life-raft, the group must together call on all their resources to survive.”

The Ascent

Adam Green’s ‘Frozen’

The director of horror films including the Hatchet franchise, Digging Up the Marrow, and the chilly survival nightmare Frozen (2010), Adam Green is set to direct his first feature in eight years with The Ascent, being described as a survival thriller… with sharks!

“The picture follows a group of friends who arrive in Europe for a glamorous but daring destination wedding. The fun and games turn into a nightmare when they find themselves precariously suspended above shark infested waters and in a battle for survival.”

The Ascent is the first project on a new international sales slate from the production banner Simple House Films, run by Addam Bramich, Ryan Hamilton and Volodymyr Artemenko.

The Black Demon: Atlantis

‘The Black Demon’

From Rambo: Last Blood director Adrian Grünberg, The Black Demon was released in 2023, and the sequel was announced early this year. It’s titled The Black Demon: Atlantis.

Variety details, “The sequel follows undercover DEA agent Jerry Simms (Kesy) who teams up with his cellmate, Chato, in a maximum-security prison stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, to dismantle a massive drug operation run by the notorious crime boss Diego Nunez.

“Their mission becomes one of survival when the legendary creature, The Black Demon, tears through the prison, which sits atop a decaying plant polluting the ocean. In a desperate move to protect his empire, Diego unleashes his own giant sea predators to take down the beast. What follows is an epic clash of monsters, where only the strongest will prevail.”

Jack Kesy (Hellboy: The Crooked Man), Julio Cesar Cedillo (The Harder They Fall) and Kate Del Castillo (Trap House) will star, with Ben Hernandez Bray directing.

Shiver

‘Violent Night’

Originally titled Beneath the Storm, Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola’s (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Dead Snow, Violent Night) shark attack movie is now titled Shiver.

Shiver will be unleashed in theaters on July 3, 2026.

Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play), Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2) and Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place: Part II) star in Shiver, produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.

The Shallows

Almost ten years after the release of The Shallows starring Blake Lively, a a Chinese remake is swimming our way. From director Banchang Xia, it’s also titled The Shallows.

The remake of the 2016 American horror movie tells “the story of a girl who loves extreme sports. When she comes to the beach alone to surf, she’s attacked by a giant shark.”

Xiaoyun Chen, Sinan Li, and Sen Wang star in Chinese remake The Shallows.

What makes the film different from its American counterpart? The Arty Dans reveals, “Like the Chinese remake of Sharktopus that used the creature and military weapon concept but created an original story, this movie does the same – keeping the elements of the shark and the survival component but adding in a sci-fi twist about Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality.”

Devil’s Mouth

‘Abigail’

Freshly announced a couple months ago, Kathryn Newton (Abigail) and Lana Condor (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) will star in the shark survival thriller Devil’s Mouth.

It follows college friends on a trip to get to Thailand who get trapped in an underwater cave system with a bull shark. Old tensions and power struggles resurface as they fight to survive.

Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare, Kick-Ass 2) will direct and produce the horror movie alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road Films (John Wick, Sicario).

Aja Gabel (“Sunny”) and Myung Joh Wesner (“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”) wrote the script, which was featured on the 2019 Black List, with revisions by Jeff Wadlow.

Amazon MGM Studios and Lionsgate are co-producing Devil’s Mouth.

Survive

Sharks aren’t the only threat in Survive, a new shark attack thriller preemptively acquired by Amazon MGM Studios based on a feature pitch, we had learned earlier this summer.

Screenwriter Ian Levy (Pay the Ghost) will write the upcoming movie.

In Survive, “a desperate mother and her 12-year-old daughter attempt to flee from her abusive boyfriend. Their escape turns into a harrowing fight for survival after a highway crash leaves them stranded on a coastal cliff, battling not only the violent man they tried to escape but also a group of sharks circling in the waters below.”

As other “Twisted Childhood Universe” (TCU) a.k.a. “Poohniverse” movies sit in the shadows, eagerly awaiting their turn to come forth and ruin your precious childhood, Dan Allen unleashes the first bona fide creature feature in the series. Don’t expect a bipedal, humanoid and verbal take on the beloved Bambi here. Quite the opposite, the star of Bambi: The Reckoning stays on all fours, doesn’t speak, and maintains some semblance of a real buck as he tears through the English countryside and builds up an impressive body count.

Before its namesake can go wild on anyone who crosses his path, Bambi: The Reckoning gets a few preliminaries out of the way. First off, a crude yet succinct animated prologue lays out the reimagined origins of the titular character, leaving the remainder of the movie to focus on the monster mayhem rather than dwell on any element of inquiry. Then, and a bit more extensively, Bambi’s prospective victims are introduced. In true storybook fashion, a mother (Roxanne McKee) and her precocious young son (Tom Mulheron) are off to see grandmother (Nicola Wright) when they’re attacked by the brutal buck. They barely live to tell the tale to their relatives, who have conveniently gathered in one place.

The story’s human fodder ranges from a family matriarch whose elderliness comes with some mild foreknowledge about the looming threat, to the team of hunters tracking the savage stag. There’s hardly a moment where Bambi has no one to trample, gore, or even chew up. And it’s not only Bambi who poses a threat to human life in these woods; director Allen and screenwriter Rhys Warrington “honor” the Disney adaptation of Bambi, a Life in the Woods by having a certain thumping sidekick join in on the slaughter.

Simplicity helps set Bambi: The Reckoning apart from past TCU offerings. It’s silly yet serious. There’s obvious intention behind the nominal lead’s rebirth, but looking past both the opportunism and the connection to a cinematic universe, this movie offers an entertaining dose of ecological horror. Thematic commentary not directly related to Bambi’s rampage, and there is some, is eclipsed by the sheer carnage. Even so, the metaphorical relationship between the two-legged parents, namely a boy’s neglectful father, and that famously orphaned fawn and his troubled upbringing is deliberate. The story, however, doesn’t fixate on that contrast.

It’s safe to assume the movie’s biggest draw is the potential bloodbath carried out by one very displeased, hellish-looking hart. On that front, Bambi: The Reckoning should succeed and satisfy. The slaying begins shortly and, barring brief cool-down periods, lasts for almost the entirety of the movie. There’s also thought in how Bambi kills, despite his undiscriminating targeting. And as opposed to all the characters dying off screen, in a flash, or just too plainly, some perish in these more calculated scenes. One particular sequence looks to be referencing Scream (1996), of all movies; in the vein of Ghostface hot on Drew Barrymore’s tail, Bambi gains on his own prey as she runs in vain across a lawn.

Given the extent of Bambi’s appearances and activity, this movie is reliant on CGI. The shroud of darkness outdoors is beneficial in hiding defects in that artifice, yet as a whole, the visual effects exceed expectations. Especially if those expectations are determined by SYFY flicks and other similar schlock. The demonic deer here is not your average specimen from previous low-budget animal horror, and he’s an astonishing sight, flaws and all. Bambi’s nightmarish redesign is a highlight here.

The fourth-released TCU entry yields no huge narrative surprises, seeing as it follows through on that simple elevator pitch of “a vicious killing machine that lurks in the wilderness.” That said, Bambi: The Reckoning delivers other surprises that make it the best movie, at least so far, in the Twisted Childhood Universe. Maybe even the whole genre of public domain horror.

If you thought the Jurassic World franchise was the only way to get your dinosaur fill on the big screen, well, that’s kind of been true for the most part over the years. But there are exceptions like the Adam Driver-starring 65 back in 2023, as well as the upcoming Primitive War.

Soldiers in Vietnam unexpectedly find themselves battling dinosaurs in director Luke Sparke’s (Occupation Rainfall, Bring Him To Me) Primitive War, which is getting a theatrical release on August 21, 2025 from Fathom Entertainment. Watch the theatrical trailer below!

Primitive War adapts author Ethan Pettus’ 2017 sci-fi military novel. Jeremy Piven (“Entourage,” Old School), Tricia Helfer (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Lucifer”), Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood,” Glorious), and Nick Wechsler (“The Boys“) headline the film.

The official synopsis: “Vietnam. 1968. A recon unit known as Vulture Squad is sent to an isolated jungle valley to uncover the fate of a missing Green Beret platoon. They soon discover they are not alone and must face the most terrifying creatures to ever walk the earth.”

Anthony Ingruber (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Aaron Glenane (Interceptor, Danger Close), Carlos Sanson Jr (Bump, Legacies), Ana Thu Nguyen (Mortal Kombat 2), Adolphus Waylee (Nautilus), Richard Brancatisano (The Messenger), Marcus Johnson (Talk to Me), and Jake Ryan (Savage, Underbelly) also star.
