While you wait for M3GAN 2.0 to dance into theaters later this month, The Asylum has announced their own mockbuster take on the franchise with the upcoming Morgan: Killer Doll.

Morgan: Killer Doll comes to Digital on June 13 and select theaters on June 20.

Bring Her Back star Sally Hawkins talks with filmmakers Danny & Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) about the freeing process of making the movie in the featurette below.

“The commitment to the film and to the story is what it’s all about, and it’s so exciting to be part of that kind of filmmaking — for everyone,” Hawkins comments.

The psychological horror film is in theaters now from A24.

Hawkins stars as a woman whose new foster children uncover a terrifying ritual at her secluded home.

Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, and Stephen Phillips round our the cast.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “The film belongs to Sally Hawkins; Laura’s calculated cunning is as infuriating as it is compelling and unpredictable … That Hawkins can also manage to induce sympathy for Laura’s own grief or nearly fall for her display of kindness speaks to her as a performer.”

Jennifer’s Body star Amanda Seyfried recently kept it coy regarding whether the long-awaited sequel was finally happening. Variety’s “Actor on Actor” series brings confirmation from Seyfried that a sequel is in the works, and touches on co-star Megan Fox’s involvement.

Seyfried, who plays protagonist Needy in director Karyn Kusama and writer Diablo Cody’s teen horror movie, sat down with her Jennifer’s Body co-star Adam Brody to chat about their careers and history together. The pair first met on set of the Kusama-directed horror movie.

In Jennifer’s Body, a newly-possessed high school cheerleader turns into a succubus who specializes in killing her male classmates, leaving it up to her best friend to put an end to the horror.

“We’re making another [“Jennifer’s Body”]. Are you going to do it?” Seyfried asks Brody in the exchange.

Brody, who played the villainous singer of the Satanic band Low Shoulder, replied, “I heard. I wasn’t contacted. I died [in the first one].” 

“So did Megan Fox, and I’m not doing it without her,” Seyfried retorts. 

Fox played the titular character, Jennifer, who was sacrificed by Low Shoulder for fame only to return a man-eating demon.

What’s interesting about this brief snippet in their interview is that not only is Seyfried taking a more definitive stance on whether a sequel is in development but she’s adamant about Fox returning. While it seems less likely that Brody’s minor supporting character would return, it’s too early to tell.

Writer Diablo Cody told Bloody Disgusting last year that she wants to make a sequel. “I am not done with Jennifer’s Body… I need to partner with people who believe it in as much as I do and that hasn’t really happened yet. I need someone to believe in it who has a billion dollars.” Cody also stated that Lisa Frankenstein is set in the same universe as Jennifer’s Body.

Major spoilers ahead: The end credits of Prey featured ledger art paintings that depicted Yautja vessels descending upon the Comanche tribe, signaling the story wasn’t over. Original animated anthology Predator: Killer of Killers continues that thread with imagery hinting toward the franchise’s future.

The anthology, now streaming on Hulu, features a triptych depicting three of the fiercest warriors in human history: a Viking raider guiding her young son on a bloody quest for revenge, a ninja in feudal Japan who turns against his Samurai brother in a brutal battle for succession, and a WWII pilot who takes to the sky to investigate an otherworldly threat to the Allied cause.

The self-contained stories eventually converge as the human warriors awaken from suspended animation and find themselves displaced by time on a strange new planet, held captive and forced to enter a gladitorial arena where they must fight each other to the death. The prize for survival? The winner must face a behemoth Warlord Predator to determine the ultimate Killer of Killers.

The trio of humans eventually learn to work together to escape their new fate, but tough-as-nails shield-maiden Ursa (Lindsay LaVanchy) sacrifices herself to aid the escape. But the Yautja have long been established as an extra-terrestrial species that honors a worthy opponent and places Ursa back in stasis instead of killing her. The anthology ends with Ursa getting placed back in their cryo storage alongside countless others that the Yauja have collected throughout time and space, with the final image of the film resting on another warrior in their possession: Naru (Amber Midthunder), the Comanche warrior who bested the Predator in Prey.

It’s a startling sight in that it not only answers the questions Prey‘s closing credit imagery evoked but that it’s not exactly the fate we’d wish for the young Comanche warrior. Still, it means she’s alive and poised to face the Predators again sometime in the future. 

Naru’s surprise appearance also highlights that Prey director and Predator: Killer of Killers co-director Dan Trachtenberg is playing the slow game when it comes to expanding the Predator franchise. The filmmaker also has Predator: Badlands on the way this year, but this Killer of Killers cameo is laying the groundwork for what’s beyond. Don’t expect to see Naru pop up in Badlands; Trachtenberg has larger ambitions for her return, which he’s keeping close to the vest.

Trachtenberg tells Bloody Disgusting, “The fun is that now we have the end of Prey set up something, and then there’s this, and I love the slow play of it all. I think is cool rather than smushing everything together inside one movie right away, we can really be elegant with our storytelling and hopefully aspire to that. So, it is not a setup for what’s in Badlands, but it is a setup for what could happen afterward.”

It’s clear the director is thinking many steps ahead, and that Naru factors into those plans if they come to pass. Naru’s appearance in the Yautja cryo bay means that a sequel to Prey could take place anywhere, at any time. What are the Yautja up to with their collection of hunters? The possibilities are now endless.

Despite an entire franchise named after one of the most superstitious calendar dates, very few Friday the 13th movies actually take place over, well, Friday the 13th. Considering this Friday brings the first and only Friday the 13th of the year, we’re theming this week’s streaming picks accordingly. Instead of slashers or the entire Friday the 13th franchise, this week’s recommendations are horror movies set on or around the day largely considered unlucky.

Freaky – Prime Video

Director Christopher Landon, who co-wrote the script with Michael Kennedy, mashes together Friday the 13th with Freaky Friday for a fun slasher with a lot of heart. Millie (Kathryn Newton) is a timid teen struggling with a loss on top of the usual teen woes. Then she crosses paths with the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn) and a newfound Aztec weapon on Friday the 13th. That weapon transforms his attempt to murder her into a body-swapping nightmare. Freaky is a love letter to slashers and teen movies, but it’s also a comforting cinematic hug dripping in blood.

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives – Pluto TV

The final entry in the Tommy Jarvis saga injected a self-referential sense of humor and a Frankenstein-inspired twist, courtesy of writer/director Tom McLoughlin. That meant a less severe and traumatized version of the hero, now played by The Return of the Living Dead’s Thom Mathews. Tommy returns to Crystal Lake, now named Forest Green, to burn Jason Voorhees’ remains. It all goes awry thanks to some freak lightning, igniting a new wave of murders from the undead slasher villain. Jason Lives is one of the entries actually set on Friday the 13th and makes references to it in dialogue.

The Hound of Baskervilles (1959)- Fawesome, Pluto TV

This adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1902 novel makes for a slightly lesser-seen option. This gothic mystery sees Sherlock Holmes (Peter Cushing) and his pal Watson investigating the murder of his friend, believed to have died of fright from seeing a ghost hound. A moody mystery full of danger and shadowed menace, all set within and around a grand manor, makes this another great gothic Hammer gem. And Cushing makes for a fantastic Sherlock Holmes. The inciting death in Dartmoor kicks off the gothic mystery and happens to have taken place on a Friday the 13th.

My Bloody Valentine (1981) – Kanopy

The sleepy town of Valentine’s Bluffs is shaking off the local folklore of Harry Warden, a man who went mad after surviving a devastating mine collapse to throw their first V-Day dance in 20 years. Naturally, it reawakens the legend as a grisly string of murders begin anew, more ruthless than before. This cult favorite slasher features no shortage of brutal kills, love triangles, and a ballad that’ll get lodged in your head. While it may theme itself around the holiday dedicated to love and romance, this slasher partially takes place over Friday the 13th in the build-up to a proper Valentine’s Day massacre on Saturday.

Saturday the 14th – Fawesome, Night Flight+, Peacock, Prime Video, Roku Channel

“Just when you thought it was safe to look at the calendar again.” An all-American family inherits a creepy old house full of monsters in this horror spoof that extends the superstitious horrors of Friday the 13th, completely unrelated to the franchise. The Roger Corman-produced horror-comedy sees the house become increasingly infested with monsters, played for pure cheesy laughs. It’s a kitchen sink type of spoof movie that aims for silliness above all else, making for a more family-friendly gateway into Friday the 13th superstition and horror.
