With films including Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe and Alien: Romulus under his belt, Fede Alvarez has established himself as a must-watch director in the horror space, with the Uruguayan filmmaker currently working on a planned sequel to Alien: Romulus. But what’s next for Alvarez beyond the Alien franchise? Well, he’d love to take a stab at a slasher film.

“On the horror side I would love to do a good old slasher,” Alvarez told Collider on the red carpet at the Saturn Awards over the weekend. “I haven’t done that really.”

He added, “A kind of classic slasher.” 

While Alvarez did produce the 2022 version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, he’s never fully dipped his toes into the slasher genre as a director. Both the Evil Dead and Alien franchises have slasher elements to them, with monsters tearing their way through victims, but it sounds like Alvarez is talking about something more akin to Halloween, Friday the 13th and the like.

On that note, is Alvarez interested in putting his own spin on a classic slasher franchise or would he rather make an original movie within the space carved out by the slasher greats?

Alvarez tells Collider in the same chat, “I wouldn’t go for an IP necessarily, but a part of me that’s sort of like very old school ’80s. That I would love to do.”

Mason Gooding, who will play Chad Meeks-Martin for a third time in Scream 7, discussed what fans can expect from the slasher sequel during a recent podcast appearance.

“This is the most brutal Ghostface I think there’s ever been from an anatomically logistical standpoint,” the actor tells I’ve Never Said This Before with Tommy DiDario.

“There’s a lot of blood and viscera, and I feel like with Kevin Williamson directing, fans have a lot to look forward to with what we do with these characters.”

Gooding joins fellow legacy cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley, and Jasmin Savoy Brown in the sequel.

Isabel May plays Sidney’s daughter. Other franchise newcomers include Celeste O’Connor, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Asa Germann, Anna Camp, Mark Consuelos, Ethan Embry, and Joel McHale as Sidney’s husband.

Williamson, writer of the original Scream as well as Scream 2 and Scream 4, is directing the latest installment from a script by Guy Busick, who penned Scream 5 and Scream 6.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, of course, but the latest installment in slasher saga is expected to bring the focus back onto Sidney and her family.

Currently in production in Atlanta, Scream 7 is scheduled to be released on February 27, 2026 by Paramount Pictures.

Warner Bros. took an interesting approach to the first teaser trailer for Final Destination Bloodlines, releasing a death sequence that effectively reminds us what the Final Destination franchise is all about. It’s been 14 years since the most recent installment, after all, making it a smart choice to usher us back into this world with some classic Final Destination mayhem.

One thing Warner Bros. confirmed for the very first time this week is that the late horror legend Tony Todd, who passed away last November, has a role in Final Destination Bloodlines.

Tony Todd played the enigmatic mortician William Bludworth in Final Destination, Final Destination 2, and Final Destination 5, and he’ll be back in this year’s brand new sequel.

It was recently rumored that Bloodlines would be diving into Bludworth’s backstory, including a flashback to his childhood, but we’ll have to wait a few months to find out.

The newest chapter in New Line Cinema’s bloody successful franchise takes audiences back to the very beginning of Death’s twisted sense of justice in theaters on May 16, 2025.

Plagued by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefanie heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle and save her family from the grisly demise that inevitably awaits them all.

Final Destination Bloodlines stars Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Rya Kihlstedt, Anna Lore, with Brec Bassinger, and Tony Todd.

The film is directed by Adam Stein & Zach Lipovsky.

It seems like a new public domain horror movie pops up every time we shut our eyes for a couple minutes, with two horror movies featuring the Popeye character already announced in recent months. In addition to Popeye the Slayer Man and Popeye’s Revenge, we’ve learned this week that Popeye horror movie Shiver Me Timbers is also headed our way.

Alpake Entertainment has released the bloody trailer for Shiver Me Timbers this morning, letting us know that the horror-comedy is headed to the European Film Market in Berlin.

The film has already been acquired by Gravitas Ventures, an Anthem Sports & Entertainment Company, for North America, with a scheduled release date in April 2025.

“Blending classic slasher thrills with off-the-wall comedy, Shiver Me Timbers pays homage to ’80s horror while bringing Popeye into his most terrifying adventure yet.”

Here’s the synopsis: “In Northern California during the summer of 1986, Olive Oyl, along with her cinema- obsessed friends and brother Castor, embark on a once-in-a-lifetime camping trip to witness the dazzling meteor shower accompanying the arrival of Halley’s comet. But what starts as a serene evening of stargazing quickly turns into a harrowing nightmare when a meteor from the comet transforms Popeye, into a terrifying and unstoppable killing machine.”

Gazer, the dark neo-noir thriller in the vein of Memento, has shifted into a new release date. With it comes a moody new poster.

Metrograph Pictures will now release the film in theaters on April 4, 2025. The film was initially set for February 21, 2025.

Gazer is directed by Ryan J. Sloan.

The neo-noir thriller follows “a young mother (co-writer Ariella Mastroianni) who, due to a unique condition that progressively affects her perception of time, is trying to save money for her daughter’s future before it’s too late. She takes a risky job from a mysterious woman with a dark past, which leads her to become entangled in a tense web of revenge, deceit, and murder.”

Ariella Mastroianni, Marcia Debonis, Renee Gagner, Jack Alberts, and Tommy Kang star.

Daniel Kurland wrote in his review for BD, “In fact, the film feels like a very post-modern deconstruction of many of Alfred Hitchcock’s films, albeit with a more horror-centric slant. However, there are also traces of other polarizing character studies like Lee Chang-dong’s Burning, Roman Polanski’s Repulsion, or Chan Wook-park’s Decision to Leave. Gazer is about making sense of madness before said madness consumes the individual, and they’re too far gone to parse out what’s real. It’s a curious study in point-of-view storytelling and how to weaponize an unreliable narrator for maximum effect.”

Sloan and Mastroianni produced the shot-on-16mm feature. From the press release, “The film was shot on a shoestring budget over weekends in the spring and fall for two years while Sloan worked as an electrician and Mastroianni in film programming in New York.” Gazer is also described as “a fresh perspective on the legendary paranoia thrillers of the 70s and 80s, but also a masterful tribute to, and bold reinvention of, the work of many great cinema artists over several generations.”
