Resident Evil is the series that won’t die, but the latest to resurrect and adapt the popular video game for the big screen is Barbarian’s Zach Cregger.

After seven live action movies and a short-lived Netflix television series, The Hollywood Reporter informs us tonight that Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are bringing the Resident Evil video game saga back to the big screen. Zach Cregger (Barbarian) is attached to write and direct the new movie, with several studios engaged in a bidding war for the project.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit notes in tonight’s exclusive report, “Four studios are elbowing for the win, among them Warner Bros. and Netflix, according to sources.”
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is said to “take the title back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games,” which has something we have certainly heard before.
The most recent installment in the film franchise, director Johannes Roberts’ Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City took a similar approach back in 2021, but ultimately failed to resonate with fans. It came in the wake of six movies starring Milla Jovovich, which collectively surpassed $1 billion at the box office by embracing an action-heavy approach to the material.
More recently, the Netflix series “Resident Evil” ran for just one season before being axed by the streamer, premiering in July 2022 to mixed reviews before being cancelled that August.
Up next from Zach Cregger, meanwhile, is Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s Weapons, which is being released in theaters on January 16, 2026. The film is being described as “a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia.”

Bird Box director Susanne Bier is in negations to helm Practical Magic 2, Deadline reports.
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are set to reprise their roles as witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens from the 1988 supernatural romantic comedy.
Bier has worked with both actresses in the past: Bullock on Bird Box and Kidman on “The Undoing” and “The Perfect Couple.”
Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, A Beautiful Mind), who co-wrote the original, is returning to pen the script. Bullock and Kidman are producing alongside returning producer Denise Di Novi.
Despite only grossing $68.3 million worldwide against a $75 million budget, Practical Magic has since gained a cult following that Warner Bros. hopes to leverage for the sequel.
Directed by Griffin Dunne, the original film saw two witch sisters, raised by their eccentric aunts in a small town, face closed-minded prejudice and a curse which threatens to prevent them ever finding lasting love.
Bier is the first female director to collectively receive an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a European Film Award (for In a Better World) and a Primetime Emmy Award (for “The Night Manager”).

It’s always a sign of a good horror movie when it’s making audiences squirm and even vomit in their seats, and this year’s first horror movie to meet those high standards has already been unleashed upon the world. It’s titled The Ugly Stepsister, a body horror twist on the classic Cinderella fairytale that just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last night.
According to a report from Variety that details the sights and sounds of Sundance’s opening night, “It was also clear that Sundance still favors the bold and doesn’t shy away from screening films that may illicit strong reactions. During the premiere of the opening Sundance Midnight movie The Ugly Stepsister, a moviegoer leaned over into the aisle and vomited.”
The outlet further details the vomitous content, “Emilie Blichfeldt’s body horror film includes several difficult-to-watch scenes of crude cosmetic surgery, including its protagonist eating a tapeworm, sewing in eyelashes and enduring a barbaric rhinoplasty.”
But is there any truth to this report or is it little more than movie marketing? Well, Bloody Disgusting’s head critic Meagan Navarro was actually on hand during the screening of The Ugly Stepsister at Sundance last night, and she has verified Variety’s eye-catching report!
Meagan tweets, “My review for The Ugly Stepsister, a gnarly body horror twist on Cinderella, is now live on @BDisgusting. In short, I loved it, but it’s not at all for the squeamish.” She adds, “Just ask the poor soul who barfed at the #Sundance premiere last night.”
As Meagan explains in her review, “Blichfeldt employs historically accurate medical procedures to great stomach-churning effect, delivering graphic body horror by way of unflinching surgeries and self-harm, all in the name of love. The filmmaker refuses to let her audience look away; each moment of Elvira’s ruthless metamorphosis from an awkward, ugly duckling into a poised stunner is drawn out to an unbearable degree and frequently shot in extreme closeups. Beauty is pain, and The Ugly Stepsister wants you to feel it on a visceral level.”
“It’s elegant, stylish, and gnarly,” Meagan adds in her 4-star review.
In the film that’s coming to Shudder later this year, “Elvira prepares to earn the prince’s affection at any cost. In a kingdom where beauty is a brutal business, Elvira will compete with the beautiful and enchanting Agnes to become the belle of the ball.”

The awkwardly charming Quasi is a standout in Star Trek: Section 31, and he’s played by one of the most enjoyable comedic actors working today.
Just six months after NEON’s Longlegs became the highest grossing indie horror movie in the past 10 years, the distributor continues to dominate the indie horror space by breaking another massive record with their next offering. Again directed by Osgood Perkins, the trailer for upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Monkey just passed 109 million views!
Deadline explains, “The first trailer for Osgood Perkins‘ The Monkey is quite the success, with a current running viewership across all platforms including TikTok of 109 million.”
Within the first 24 hours, the trailer for The Monkey passed 43 million views and hit 100 million in the first 72 hours, which Deadline says is “arguably a record for a non-MPA studio independent horror movie.” Deadline adds for further context, “Among other horror trailers that count TikTok views, The Monkey beats such pics as Smile which netted 100M views ($22.6M opening); The Black Phone at 73M for its first trailer and 37M for its second trailer ($23.6M opening); and Talk To Me’s second trailer which came in at 23M. The Monkey also beat out both first and second trailers for Nosferatu at 74M and 48M, respectively ($21.6M 3-day opening).”
It sounds like NEON may have another horror hit on their hands here in early 2025. Produced by James Wan, The Monkey arrives in theaters on February 21, 2025.

In The Monkey, “When twin brothers find a mysterious wind-up monkey, a series of outrageous deaths tear their family apart. Twenty-five years later, the monkey begins a new killing spree forcing the estranged brothers to confront the cursed toy.”
The Monkey is a short horror story that appeared in King’s Skeleton Crew, a 1985 collection that also featured The Mist, The Jaunt, The Raft, Survivor Type, The Reach, and more.

Miramax and Paramount are bringing the Scary Movie franchise back to theaters with a new reboot movie, and Marlon Wayans has taken to Instagram to announce the release date.
The Scary Movie reboot slashes into theaters on June 12, 2026!
The horror spoof franchise was developed by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans, and the Wayans brothers are back to write the brand new movie.
Deadline details, “It’s the first time in 18 years that the Wayans have gathered to pen a new original script for the restart of the satirical franchise. Rick Alvarez is also writing and producing.”
Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Wayans said in a recent statement, “We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”
The first Scary Movie was released in 2000, just four years after Wes Craven reinvigorated the horror genre with his meta slasher masterpiece, Scream. The film parodied horror movies of the time including Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Blair Witch Project, and the horror-comedy spoof scared up $278 million at the worldwide box office.
The smash hit box office success of that first Scary Movie paved the way for an entire franchise of horror movie spoofs, with five of them in total released between 2000 and 2013.
Like many franchises, the Scary Movie sequels became a series of diminishing returns in later years, but having the Wayans’ back in the fold suggests that the franchise’s sixth installment may mark a return to the quality of those first couple installments. And with so much new horror content to spoof here in the present day, we expect the brothers will have a blast.
