The box office success of Alien: Romulus last year has given the franchise a fresh dose of new life, and director Fede Alvarez is currently hard at work on cracking a sequel.

Speaking with Empire Online this week, Alvarez provides an update on Alien: Romulus 2. “Rodo [Sayagues] and I are working on that right now,” Alvarez tells Empire.

“We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters,” Alvarez continues.

As 20th Century Studios head Steve Asbell noted last year, a sequel to Alien: Romulus would likely follow the characters played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson in Alien: Romulus, who survived the harrowing events of last year’s movie. Spaeny’s heroine Rain Carradine is essentially the Ripley of Alien: Romulus while Jonsson’s Andy is her android brother.

“I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before,” Alvarez further teases in his chat with Empire Online.

“The mistake usually with sequels is to make them because you can, and because of the success of Romulus, we definitely can make a sequel,” the filmmaker also notes. “But I wouldn’t do it unless we have a really good idea for it, something that’s worthy of the title.”

In other words, a sequel to Romulus from Fede Alvarez isn’t 100% guaranteed, but he’s hard at work trying to make it happen. Stay tuned for more on all things Alien as we learn it.

In the meantime, Disney brings the franchise to the small screen with “Alien: Earth” this year. Last we heard, the first ever Alien television series is coming to FX & Hulu in Summer 2025.

Netflix returns to the universe of “The Witcher” with the brand new animated movie The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, and the bloody official trailer has been unleashed this morning.

Expect The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep to hit Netflix on February 11, 2025. “People think I’ve gone soft on killing monsters,” Geralt growls in the new trailer. “I’ll prove them wrong.”

Humans, monsters and merpeople collide in this dark animated fantasy…

“Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter, is hired to investigate a series of attacks in a seaside village and finds himself drawn into a centuries-old conflict between humans and merpeople. He must count on friends — old and new — to solve the mystery before the hostilities between the two kingdoms escalate into all-out war.”

Sirens of the Deep takes place between episodes 5 and 6 of “The Witcher” Season 1.

Doug Cockle will be voicing Geralt in the movie. The spinoff film is directed by Kang Hei Chul and written by the series’ writers Mike Ostrowski and Rae Benjamin.

“The Witcher” series stars Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey will also reprise their roles as Yennefer of Vengerberg and Jaskier for the upcoming Netflix animated movie.

New character Essi Davis will be voiced by Christina Wren.

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep comes from South Korean animation studio Studio MIR, who was also behind Netflix’s The Legend of Korra and Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Up next from director Jaume Collet-Serra (House of Wax, Orphan, The Shallows) is the Universal & Blumhouse thriller The Woman in the Yard, and the first trailer has arrived to give an ominous peek at the eerie title character.

The Woman in the Yard releases in theaters on March 28, 2025.

Watch the new trailer below, which sees a lone, strange woman shrouded entirely in black as she appears on a family’s front lawn without explanation and warns them “today’s the day.”

Danielle Deadwyler (Till, The Harder They Fall, The Piano Lesson) as “Ramona, a woman crippled by grief after she survives a car accident that takes her husband (Russell Hornsby; BMF, Fences). Seriously injured, Ramona now must care for their 14-year-old son (Peyton Jackson; Respect, American Refugee) and 6-year-old-daughter (Estella Kahiha; Will Trent, BMF), alone in her rural farmhouse. Then one day the woman takes form in their yard.

“Ramona assumes the woman (Okwui Okpokwasili; The Exorcist: Believer, Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream) is lost or demented, but as the woman creeps nearer and nearer to the house, it becomes clear she is no ordinary figure and her intentions are anything but peaceful. Now Ramona must rally to protect herself and her children from the grasp of the woman who simply won’t leave them alone.”

Collet-Serra directs the film written by first-time feature screenwriter Sam Stefanak.

The new thriller also marks a reunion between Collet-Serra and Deadwyler, who collaborated on action thriller Carry On. Deadwyler is best known for 2022’s biopic Till and the Western The Harder They Fall. On the horror front, the actor also appeared in A24’s I Saw the TV Glow. Deadwyler isn’t just starring, she also executive produced the film alonside Collet-Serra, Gabrielle Ebron, Scott Greenberg and James Mora. Jason Blum and Stephanie Allain serve as producers.

Same night, different nightmare. Sony Pictures has released first look footage from the movie adaptation of the Until Dawn video game this morning, in the form of a featurette video with insights from director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle Creation, Shazam), writer Gary Dauberman (It, The Nun) and star Peter Stormare. Watch the footage below!

Until Dawn will be unleashed in theaters on April 25, 2025.

Of particular note, Sandberg reveals in the video that the upcoming Until Dawn movie will have a similar mechanic to the choose-your-own-adventure style of the video game.

“One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways,” Sandberg explains. “The movie has this mechanic, where things start over and they get to try again. Every time they come back to life, it’s like they’re in a new horror genre.”

“To survive,” Sandberg continues, “They have to make it Until Dawn.”

There’s not enough footage here to form any real opinion on the movie at this time, but Sony promises that the full trailer is coming soon. For now, the video game-like plot mechanics have us intrigued, with the clever premise laying the foundation for what could be a highly unique slasher movie. And Sandberg’s batting average in the horror genre is high, impressing with both his feature debut Lights Out and his Conjuring Universe prequel, Annabelle: Creation.

Here’s the brand new plot synopsis for the Until Dawn movie:

“One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again – only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.”

Ella Rubin (The Idea of You), Michael Cimino (“Never Have I Ever”), Ji-young Yoo (“Expats”) and Odessa A’zion (Hulu’s Hellraiser) will star in the upcoming horror film.

Peter Stormare (Clown, John Wick 2), Maia Mitchell and Belmont Cameli also star.

Blair Butler (The Invitation) wrote the original draft, and Gary Dauberman (Salem’s Lot) worked on the script. The film is said to be “an R-rated love letter to the horror genre.”

Director Maggie Gyllenhaal revives the iconic Bride of Frankenstein this fall in upcoming feature film The Bride! In an interview with THR, actor John Magaro (Overlord) reveals new details on the film, teasing that audiences are in for a “wild, fun ride.”

Originally set for release on October 3, The Bride! will now release on September 26, 2025.

The upcoming film “sees a lonely Frankenstein travel to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.”

Christian Bale is Frankenstein’s Monster, with Jessie Buckley as the titular Bride. The Bride! will also star Penelope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, and Magaro, who might have September 5 costar Peter Sarsgaard to thank for his role in Gyllenhaal’s film.

But it’s Magaro’s description of The Bride! that’s most intriguing.

“Peter was kind enough to recommend me to his wife [Gyllenhaal] for The Bride!, so I had a really good time shooting it last spring. It’s a wild movie. It’s very different than The Lost Daughter,“ Magaro told THR.

“It’s like a mix of a Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers movie, Young Frankenstein, Frankenstein, Bonnie and Clyde and Badlands. It’s just a wild, fun ride. It’s something that people haven’t seen before, and I’m really excited to get it in front of an audience. It’s bonkers.“

That’s an interesting blend of films, with all signs pointing toward an ultra-stylized genre-bender ahead. While Magaro teases the film itself, there’s no word yet on who he’ll be playing in The Bride!

In the original 1935 film by director James Whale, “After recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life. Meanwhile, the Monster (Boris Karloff) remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.”
