Sydney Sweeney to Star in Supernatural Thriller ‘The Caretaker’ from Director David Bruckner

Hot off the success of The Housemaid, Sydney Sweeney is set to star in another adaptation of a thriller novel — this time with a supernatural twist.

THR reports that Sweeney will lead The Caretaker, based on the upcoming novel by Marcus Kliewer, for Universal.

David Bruckner (The Ritual, Hellraiser) is set to write and direct the horror thriller, based on earlier drafts by Karl Gajdusek (Oblivion) and Drew Crevello (“WeCrashed”).

Michael Bay & Brad Fuller are producing via Platinum Dunes under its first-look deal with Paramount, alongside Sweeney for Fifty-Fifty Films and Scott Glassgold (Tarot) for 12:01 Films.

Publishing April 21 via the newly launched 12:01 Books, The Caretaker follows Macy Mullins, a young woman who answers an urgent job posting that promises competitive pay for three days of work.

What starts as a peculiar side gig soon becomes a waking nightmare. An incomprehensible evil may dwell on the Oregon Coast property — and Macy might just be the only thing standing between it and the rest of humanity.

Sweeney’s other upcoming projects include The Housemaid’s Secret, due out December 17, 2027, and Netflix’s live-action Gundam movie.

‘A Mother’s Recall’ Trailer – A Sinister Presence Shapes a Family from Within

The safety of home begins to collapse under the weight of something inhuman in the trailer for A Mother’s Recall.

Said to be “based on real fears,” the Argentine psychological horror film fuses slow-burn dread, intimate character drama, and supernatural terror.

It follows Genaro, a teenage orphan who appears to be given a chance at belonging by a new family. But as he settles into his new home, he begins to feel that something is profoundly wrong.

As he grows closer to his troubled sister, the two uncover a dark and malevolent force lurking within the house. Bound together by fear, grief, and the search for truth, they must face the sinister presence that feeds on their pain and threatens to consume them all.

With an emotionally charged descent into the unseen forces that can shape a family from within, writer-director Mauro Iván Ojeda explores universal fears of abandonment, identity, and the desperate need for connection.

Santino Resta, Julieta Palermo, Vilma Echeverría, Edgardo Molinelli, Virginia Garófalo, Mayra Sánchez, Mateo Berti, Lorenzo Crespo, Guadalupe Aldaz Gallo, and Miguel Bosco star.

Black Mandala is handling international sales on the project. Stay tuned for US release details.

Matt Smith & Imogen Poots to Star in Mystery-Thriller ‘The Salamander Lives Twice’

Matt Smith (“House of the Dragon”) and Imogen Poots (Green Room) are attached to star in the absurd mystery-thriller The Salamander Lives Twice, Deadline reports.

The project reunites director Ant Timpson and writer Toby Harvard for their third film following 2019’s Come to Daddy and 2024’s Bookworm.

Smith will star as a debonair stranger who washes ashore on a remote island wearing a Rolex and holding an briefcase he can’t open, with no memory of who he is or why he is there.

Taken in by the sole inhabitants – Iris, a glamorous wine-soaked matriarch, her erudite daughter Goggy (Poots) and Baby, their giant naked butler – he is drawn into their bizarre and decaying world.

But this is no accident. What begins as sanctuary turns into something far stranger, far darker – a world of pent-up revenge, sinister family betrayal, and shocking violence.

Emma Slade & Roxi Bull of Velvet Moss (Come to Daddy) and Andy Starke (Possessor) of Anti-Worlds will produce.

The team is eyeing a February 2027 shoot on a remote island. Embankment Films has boarded the project for sales ahead of next month’s Cannes film market.

Embankment’s Archie Faulks describes the film as “a wildly entertaining Hitchcockian thriller served up on a gourmet platter of absurdist comedy and psychological suspense. It keeps audiences guessing right up to an ending they won’t see coming and won’t forget.”

An earlier version of The Salamander Lives Twice was set to star Vera Farmiga and Adrien Brody back in 2020, but the pandemic halted that iteration.

Spielberg Says ‘Disclosure Day’ Marketing Shows NOTHING of the Movie’s Third Act

Steven Spielberg is looking up at the night skies once again with Disclosure Day this summer, and he offered a pretty intriguing tease live on stage at CinemaCon tonight.

Discussing Film reports from the event, “Steven Spielberg has revealed that the entire third act of Disclosure Day is being kept out of the marketing.”

The official CinemaCon account similarly tweets, “Spielberg says he was very careful and protective of NOT revealing the third act in any of the trailers or previews.”

Spielberg also said during Universal’s CinemaCon presentation tonight, “I really truly believe that this movie is going to answer questions and cause you to ask a lot of questions.”

He teases, “All you need to get from the beginning to the end (of this movie) is a seatbelt.”

All will become clear when the sci-fi blockbuster invades theaters and IMAX June 12.

The vague synopsis for Disclosure Day reads: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to Disclosure Day.”

David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man) wrote the script, based on a story by Spielberg.

Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Josh O’Connor (Wake Up Dead Man), Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies), Colman Domingo (The Running Man), and Wyatt Russell (“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”) star in Spielberg’s latest.
