Sony Acquires Rights To ‘Arrival’ Screenwriter’s Suspenseful Supernatural Novel ‘Simultaneous’

Arrival and Bird Box screenwriter Eric Heisserer’s debut novel, Simultaneous, was published earlier this week, and Sony Pictures has acquired rights to adapt it into a feature film, per Deadline.

Simultaneous, Published on October 28, 2025, by Flatiron Books, sees “a past-life regression therapist and an agent from the Predictive Analytics department of Homeland Security become unlikely partners when they discover a phenomenon tied to reincarnation, uncovering a supernatural killer exploiting his own past lives.”

The film will be developed as part of Heisserer’s first-look deal with Sony Pictures, which also includes Dissolution, an adaptation of Nicholas Binge’s novel.

Heisserer’s novel is already amassing critical acclaim from notable writers.  Leigh Bardugo, author of “Shadow and Bones,” which was adapted for Netflix by Heisserer, called the book “A twisty, mind-bending thriller that will keep you guessing until the final gut punch.”

Cold Storage author and Jurassic Park writer David Koepp said, “Eric Heisserer’s Simultaneous has a mind-blowing premise and razor-sharp execution. Wildly imaginative, emotional, and propulsive—I could not put it down!”

The praise, along with the novel’s premise, suggests a pulse-pounding thriller ahead from Sony.

Heisserer earned an Oscar nomination for “Best Adapted Screenplay” for Arrival, but his horror credits include Lights Out, Final Destination 5, and The Thing (2011).

Stay tuned.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers & Ben Miles Will Hunt Mermaids in ‘The Catch’

Jonathan Rhys Meyers (“The Tudors”) and Ben Miles (“Andor”) are set to make waves in The Catch, Deadline reports.

Irish filmmaker Jo Southwell will make her feature debut on the horror film, which begins production in March.

It follows a ruthless culinary showdown as a brilliant but obsessive chef journeys to Cornwall in search of the rarest seafood of all — a mermaid. As obsession turns to madness, the chef learns that some legends are better left undiscovered.

Mermaid Films’ Sara Gibbings (“Welcome to Wrexham”) is producing alongside Epic Pictures, who will introduce the project to buyers at the American Film Market.

The Catch is a razor-sharp blend of myth and obsession, a story that reminds us that the real monsters are often human,” said Epic Pictures CEO Patrick Ewald. “With Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Ben Miles bringing fierce depth to their roles, and the visionary partnership of Jo Southwell and Sara Gibbings steering the project, this haunting film is destined to make waves.”

Meyers and Miles previously worked together on NBC’s “Dracula” series, in which Meyers starred in the titular role and Miles played Lorn Browning.
