For many years, Frankenstein was a bucket list project for Guillermo del Toro, but that dream finally becomes a reality here in the tail end of 2025. Frankenstein will release in select theaters on October 17 before streaming on Netflix on November 7, but will it pave the way for del Toro to bring another passion project to life? At the Mountains of Madness, perhaps?

As most are aware, Guillermo del Toro was at one point knee deep in a film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s 1931 novella At the Mountains of Madness, which of course never came to fruition. The project’s origins date back to 2006, and the plan was for the film to be a rated R affair with a big budget and both Tom Cruise and James Cameron on board to produce.

The would-be H.P. Lovecraft adaptation essentially tells of a disastrous Antarctic expedition that encounters unspeakable horrors after discovering ancient ruins.

Several studios ultimately ended up passing on the big-budget project, spelling the end of del Toro’s Lovecraftian dreams. But we’re still asking ourselves… what could have been?

We may never know, unfortunately. Del Toro admits in a chat with Empire this month that his At the Mountains of Madness movie will likely remain an unmade passion project.

“The one that’s on the bucket list that I think is gonna stay there is [At the Mountains of Madness],” he tells the outlet. “It’s too big, too crazy, too R-rated, I guess.”

Del Toro adds, “And to be completely candid, I don’t know that I want to do it after this.”

All the remains of the unmade project is a bit of test footage that Guillermo del Toro shared on Instagram a few years back. Del Toro captions the footage, “All CGI test for a rig – ILM [Industrial Light & Magic] for At the Mountains of Madness (a decade ago) never-before-seen.”

Crispin Glover (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Back to the Future) falls down the rabbit hole into a Kafkaesque nightmare in the trailer for Mr. K.

The surreal mystery opens in New York on October 8 and in Los Angeles and Chicago on October 24, followed by a nationwide rollout from Doppelgänger Releasing.

Traveling magician Mr. K is down on his luck. Business is slow, and the few gigs he’s picked up along the road have left him adrift.

After spending the night in a remote hotel, he is alarmed when he discovers that he is unable to find the exit. As he explores the maze-like corridors, he hears strange noises and encounters a series of curious inhabitants who have formed their own factions within the walls of the hotel.

Alone and afraid, he starts mapping out the corridors, desperately hoping to get to the bottom of the building’s layout before it is too late. Stuck more hopelessly than ever and about to give up, he makes a bizarre discovery that will change everything.

The Netherlands-Belgium co-production is written and directed by Tallulah H. Schwab.

Sunnyi Melles, Fionnula Flanagan, Bjørn Sundquist, Dearbhla Molloy, Barbara Sarafian, Jan Gunnar Røise, Esmée van Kampen, and Sam Louwyck round out the cast.

“Mr. K explores the way we try to mold reality into something we can control and understand and how we protect the status quo by surrounding ourselves with others who share our view, making the world bite size and relatable,” explained Schwab.

Mr. K premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.

The question for every filmmaker is always “what’s next?”, even when their latest movie hasn’t even come out. In the case of Oscar-winning visionary Guillermo del Toro, his latest passion project Frankenstein will release in select theaters on October 17 before streaming on Netflix on November 7. So what’s next for del Toro, in a post-Frankenstein world?

Speaking with Empire, the acclaimed filmmaker notes that his long-awaited Frankenstein adaptation closes a certain “cycle” of his career. And he may surprise us with what comes next.

“This movie closes the cycle,” del Toro explains to Empire. “If you look at the lineage, from Cronos to The Devil’s Backbone, to Pan’s Labyrinth to Crimson Peak to this, this is an evolution of a certain type of aesthetic, and a certain type of rhythm, and a certain type of empathy.”

“I feel like I need a change,” del Toro admits.

He adds, however, “You never know. The day after tomorrow, I may want to do Jekyll & Hyde, or whatever. But right now, my desire is to try and do something very different.”

It’s fitting that Frankenstein might end up closing a particular chapter within Guillermo del Toro’s filmography, as the film has been a passion project for del Toro for much of his life.

“This is, for me, the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life. I first read Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein as a kid and saw Boris Karloff in what became for me an almost religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system,” the Academy Award-winning filmmaker told the audience at Netflix’s recent Tudum event.

“There are strands of Frankenstein throughout my films — Cronos, Blade, Hellboy, big time on Pinocchio, and a long, long et cetera. Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son, has consumed my stores again and again,” del Toro continued. “I wanted to make this film before even I had a camera, and I’ve been actively pursuing it now for over 25 years It has grown so close to me that now it’s biography.”

The Awakening – Kanopy, Tubi

Set in 1921, Rebecca Hall stars as paranormal debunker Florence Cathcart. She accepts an invitation from war vet Robert Mallory (Dominic West) to stay at the boarding school where he teaches, to determine if the place is indeed haunted. The more she encounters strange phenomena, the more her skepticism gets shaken. The realization that the hauntings exist comes with frightening reveals about Florence’s past. The Awakening bears a stronger resemblance to The Devil’s Backbone than The Others, in terms of period supernatural movies. There are genuine paranormal frights, but there’s more than meets the eye to this spectral tale.

Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes – Fandango at Home, Hoopla, Kanopy, Prime Video

An unhappy woman and her irritable husband have just inherited a rundown mansion, but reality and time cease to hold meaning the longer they stay and realize something is amiss with the place. Kevin Kopacka directs a sumptuous visual feast, channeling the likes of Mario Bava and capturing a psychedelic, ’70s Italian occult aesthetic. What begins as a bizarre, disjointed movie that favors style over coherent story quickly gives way to something far more unexpected and extensive in scope. In other words, it’s a gorgeous, ethereal movie full of surprising twists that deftly shift genres in a clever deconstruction of Gothic horror.

The Others – AMC+, Shudder, Criterion Channel (starting October 1)

Director Alejandro Amenábar’s atmospheric horror movie brought the haunted house back to its gothic roots. Set in 1945, a mother (Nicole Kidman) cares for her light-sensitive children while her husband is away at war. Things start going bump in the night, and soon the children claim to see other people inhabiting their home with threats that the house actually belongs to them. This traditional ghost story eventually gives way to tragedy, one that changes the perspective of the entire film. If there’s one recurring theme of haunted houses, it’s residual grief that refuses to mend.

Sleepy Hollow – Hoopla, Kanopy, Paramount+, Pluto TV

Fallen leaves, gnarled trees, and a constant roll of fog leave the small town of Sleepy Hollow steeped in the autumn air. That’s where police constable Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) winds up on an assignment to investigate a series of beheadings. The culprit, of course, is the legendary Headless Horseman. Based on Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Tim Burton’s Gothic tale is intertwined with Halloween and the Fall season. Look for new twists and updates to the iconic story, with a witchy take on the iconic headless foe.

The Woman in Black – Hoopla, Kanopy, MGM+, Paramount+

This Gothic horror movie adapts Susan Hill’s 1989 novel and follows recent widower and lawyer Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) as he’s sent on assignment to sort the affairs of a deceased client. The caveat, of course, is that the client’s home is a desolate manor on a gloomy marsh. Oh, and it’s deeply haunted. Director James Watkins (Eden Lake, Speak No Evil) maintains a dreary, foreboding atmosphere from the moment Arthur arrives at the estate. From there, Watkins keeps escalating the chills with spectral encounters and terrifying things that go bump in the night.
