Can Sleepaway Camp work for modern audiences? We’re about to find out.

AFA, the production company of “Saturday Night Live” stalwart Kenan Thompson and producer Johnny Ryan Jr. (Bill & Ted Face the Music, Good Burger 2), has acquired remake rights to the 1983 slasher, Deadline reports.

Robert Hiltzik, who wrote and directed the original cult classic, is back at the helm to direct from his own screenplay.

Development on the script is currently underway. Plot details have not been revealed, but Ryan Jr. promises, “We’re staying true to the OG story while Robert adding in some insane new twists.”

As Deadline notes, “While for decades, Hiltzik and his wife have been approached for rights to the franchise, they’ve held out in hopes of a scenario where they can be involved in revitalizing the franchise. To Thompson and Ryan Jr., whose AFA places an emphasis on keeping creative control and ownership with the artist, keeping the original architects of the franchise at the forefront of its evolution is a given.”

Robinson Velasco, Monica Weber, Cory Litwin, and Boris Shvarts will executive produce. Range Select is handling sales on the project.

“I am both thrilled and humbled to be working with AFA on the reimagined Sleepaway Camp,” Hiltzik told Deadline. “Though I have been approached by several companies regarding the remake of Sleepaway Camp, only AFA has shared my vision and is excited to have me helm the film, therefore preserving the integrity of the original film for the fans, as well as introducing Sleepaway Camp to a whole new generation. Be prepared for a new member of the Sleepaway Camp family.”

“Excited to work with the original genius Robert and bring back to life a camp classic!” said Thompson.

“Kenan and I always say we’re fans first and this couldn’t be more on brand for us,” added Ryan Jr. “I’ve been obsessed with the Sleepaway Camp franchise since I was a kid. We’ve wanted this title for 20 years, and we’re over the moon Robert came back to write it.”

Thompson recently executive produced the horror-comedy Halloween Store, currently in post-production.

Logan Miller (Escape Room), Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather), and Robert Longstreet (Halloween Kills) star in the indie slasher A Dying Art.

At Pacific Northwest State University, students are being murdered in ways that mimic classic horror films. Is the new film professor the killer? His students must uncover the truth — if they can survive.

Written and directed by David Franklin, the film recently wrapped production in Seattle as part of Washington Filmworks’ Small Budget Production Initiative.

Newcomer Victoria Cedeño, Gareth Williams (“Mindhunter”), Nick Gomez (“The Walking Dead”), and Paden Fallis (“Tulsa King”) round out the cast.

Autonomous FX (Weapons) created the practical special effects, while The Artery (Smile) handled the visual effects.

Daniel Gildark, Joshua Carlin, Nesib Shamah, and Vico Sharabani produce, with Robert Chang serving as executive producer.

Michael Myers is getting ready to come home with Halloween: The Game next year, but in the meantime, we’ve learned that The Shape is headed back to theaters THIS year.

John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) will terrify audiences once more when it returns to theatres across the country this October. The chilling classic, along with Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, will appear in more than 80 markets and nearly 400 showings, with additional locations being added daily.

John Carpenter’s original horror classic paved the way for the Golden Age of Slashers in the 1980s, the film introducing Jamie Lee Curtis as iconic final girl Laurie Strode. The film begins on Halloween night in 1963 with six-year old Michael Myers brutally murdering his 17-year old sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, a 21-year old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes Smith’s Grove. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims…

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers was released nearly a decade later in 1988. The apparently comatose Michael Myers (George P. Wilbur) is being transferred from one hospital to another, but he wakes up when the ambulance crew talk about his surviving niece, Jamie (Danielle Harris). After slaughtering his attendants, Myers sets out to find his one living relative who is, fortunately, being cared for by a kind and resourceful foster sister named Rachel (Ellie Cornell). Meanwhile, the ever-cautious Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) remains on the killer’s path.

And then in Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, Michael Myers (Donald L. Shanks) awakens from a year-long coma and stalks his way back to his small hometown in Illinois, intent on killing his niece, Jamie (Danielle Harris), who has been confined to a mental institution since Michael’s last attempt to slay her. Suspecting a psychic link between Michael and Jamie, psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence) joins forces with Sheriff Ben Meeker (Beau Starr) and attempts to stop Michael’s latest rampage.

A24 has announced a brand new Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Collector’s Edition set that brings together Ti West’s complete X Trilogy, including the films X, Pearl, and MaXXXine.

Ti West’s X Trilogy gets the Collector’s Edition treatment with the new three-disc box set available in Blu-ray and 4K UHD formats, and it’s up for pre-order now in A24’s shop.

This notably marks the first physical release of X and Pearl on 4K in the US. Special Features include a booklet with a new essay, unreleased concept art, costume sketches, behind-the-scenes photography, original poster and VHS artwork created as set dressing for the films, over 90 minutes of making-of featurettes, and new commentary tracks on all three films.
