It’s now been three years since Netflix premiered Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a “legacy sequel” to Tobe Hooper’s original horror classic that arrived on February 18, 2022. Now, fresh rumors have begun to swirl that the franchise may be revving back to life for a new installment.

Deadline reports today that studios are knocking at Verve’s door; the agency has repped the rights for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series since 2017. While nothing has been officially set in motion just yet, the names showing interest in the IP have us intrigued.

The outlet reveals that Strange Darling filmmaker JT Mollner and producer Roy Lee are at the forefront of the conversation around reviving the franchise, with in-demand actor Glen Powell, star of the upcoming Running Man reboot, interested in reading Mollner’s script for a possible star vehicle and producing role. Lionsgate and A24 are also reportedly said to be eyeing the IP for new features.

Blood may be in the water, but Verve hasn’t answered any doors as of now. “Verve represents The Texas Chainsaw Massacre estate and is building out a multimedia strategy for the seminal horror franchise,” the agency’s rep told Deadline. “Verve has not officially submitted the property into any filmmakers, producers or buyers,” the rep added. “Because this is such a hot and iconic horror property, packages are preemptively being brought to Verve.”

That the IP is seemingly in high demand and franchise rumors have been circling since Netflix’s installment suggests that it may only be a matter of time, though.

The franchise began with 1974’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, conceived by Kim Henkel and director Tobe Hooper, and introduced horror icon Leatherface when five friends set out to rural Texas to visit a grandfather’s grave. The film would become a cultural phenomenon with eight subsequent sequels, reboots, and prequel films. The highest grossing installment was 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with original DP Daniel Pearl returning.

Dark Sky Films has released the first trailer for A Desert, director Joshua Erkman’s feature debut that blends hilistic neo-noir and horror.

A Desert releases in select theaters on May 2, 2025.

In the noir horror thriller, “A past his prime photographer heads out on a road trip across the American Southwest to recapture the magic and success of his previous work. Instead, he finds himself thrust into the dark and chaotic underbelly of America and unwittingly drags his wife and a shady private detective down into this nightmare world with him.”

David Yow (The Toxic Avenger, Dinner in America), Kai Lennox (Green Room), Sarah Lind (A Wounded Fawn), Zachary Ray Sherman (“Under the Banner of Heaven”), Ashley B. Smith (Off Ramp, Extremity), Rob Zabrecky (A Ghost Story), and S.A. Griffin (Vegas Vacation) star.

I wrote in my review out of Tribeca Film Fest, “A Desert reaches a fitting conclusion, thematically and tonally, but the steadfast refusal for tidy answers may polarize. Still, the refreshingly unpredictable journey and richly textured worldbuilding establish Erkman as a bold new voice, one that deftly blends genres with stunning precision.”

Director Zach Cregger (Barbarian) may have found one of the stars for his upcoming Resident Evil movie, with Deadline reporting that Austin Abrams (Wolfs, the upcoming Whalefall) is in talks to join the cast. Abrams is also starring in Cregger’s upcoming movie Weapons.

After seven live action movies and a short-lived Netflix television series, Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are bringing Resident Evil back to the big screen, with Cregger writing and directing. Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil hits theaters September 18, 2026.

This latest Resident Evil movie is said to “take the title back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games,” with Cregger and Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) writing.

The most recent installment in the film franchise, director Johannes Roberts’ Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City took a similar approach back in 2021, but ultimately failed to resonate with fans. It came in the wake of six movies starring Milla Jovovich, which collectively surpassed $1 billion at the box office by embracing an action-heavy approach to the material.

More recently, the Netflix series “Resident Evil” ran for just one season before being axed by the streamer, premiering in July 2022 to mixed reviews before being cancelled that August.

“Three days after the funeral, the dead heart awakens.” Hyun Moon-Seop’s Devils Stay aims to break all exorcism horror rules, and it’s now available on VOD outlets at home.

In the film, “After the sudden tragic loss of his daughter following an exorcism, a renowned heart surgeon refuses to face the reality that his child has died, despite declarations from medical examiners and even the priest who performed the expulsion.

“But as the funeral rites begin, mourners start witnessing unnerving changes to the girl’s body, leaving the priest to wonder whether something much more sinister—an evil more ancient than Catholicism itself—may once again be looming over them all.”

Park Shin-yang (“My Lawyer, Mr. Jo,” “Man on the Edge,“ “The Big Swindle”), Lee Min-ki (“Crash,” “My Liberation Notes,” “Very Ordinary Couple”) and Lee Re (“It’s Okay!,” “Peninsula,” “Hellbound”) star in the exorcism horror movie.

The Ridgefield Boogeyman is back. Breaking Glass Pictures released their indie horror-comedy slasher sequel Revenge of the Boogeyman onto VOD outlets this past Tuesday.

This one’s a sequel to Beware the Boogeyman, released last year.

In director Erik Skybak’s film, “A group of friends at a secluded cabin in the woods begin to realize that the local legend of the Ridgefield Boogeyman may be more than just a story.”

 Calvin McCarthy, Tim Coyle, and Jax Kellington star.

“Stranger Things” star Sadie Sink brings light to the darkness in O’Dessa, a post apocalyptic rock opera that began streaming exclusively on Hulu on Thursday, March 20.

Sink stars as O’Dessa, a farm girl on an epic quest to recover a cherished family heirloom. Her journey leads her to a strange and dangerous city where she meets her one true love — but in order to save his soul, she must put the power of destiny and song to the ultimate test. Kelvin Harrison Jr., Murray Bartlett, Mark Boone Junior, and Regina Hall co-star.

Geremy Jasper (Patti Cake$) wrote and directed O’Dessa, in addition to creating the film’s 16 original songs (yes, SIXTEEEN ORIGINAL SONGS!) with Jason Binnick (Patti Cake$).

South Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan) is back this week with the new Netflix thriller Revelations, which just premiered on the streaming service today.

“A pastor is convinced that he’s called upon to punish the person guilty of a missing person case, while a detective assigned to the case is haunted by her dead sister’s shadow.”

Ryu Jun-yeol and Shin Hyeon-bin star in the film.

Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Kyu-seok co-wrote the script, adapting their 2022 comic book of the same name. The pair previously collaborated on both seasons of the Netflix series “Hellbound.”

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Roma) exec produced.

From producer Sam Raimi and director David Yarovesky (Brightburn), the horror-thriller Locked arrived in theaters today. Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins star.

In the intense thriller, “A petty thief (Bill Skarsgård) breaks into a state-of-the-art SUV, only to find himself trapped inside. Controlled remotely by its vengeful owner (Anthony Hopkins), the vehicle becomes a deadly prison, hurtling him into a high-speed battle for survival.”

Michael Arlen Ross (Turistas) wrote the screenplay.

Locked is a remake of the Argentinian action thriller 4X4.

Director Robert Michael Ryan’s public domain horror movie Popeye the Slayer Man is chewing spinach and slaughtering victims in theaters and on VOD outlets now.

In Popeye the Slayer Man, “a group of friends sneak into an abandoned spinach canning factory to film a documentary on the legend of the Sailor Man, who is said to haunt the factory.”

“Popeye the Slayer Man’s dark reimagining of the classic Popeye character not only delivers a fresh take on a beloved icon but also showcases its thrilling storytelling and bold visual style. Popeye the Slayer Man stars Sean Michael Conway, Elena Juliano, Mabel Thomas, Marie-Louise Boisnier, Jeff Thomas, and Steven McCormack, along with Angela Relucio (Code Black, The Cabining) and Sarah Nicklin (Nun of That, The Black Mass).

Jason Stephens plays the title role of the murderous Popeye. Robert Michael Ryan (Ouija Witch) directs the film from a screenplay by John Doolan (Remains).

Religious fanaticism collides with modern society in the social media age in the French horror thriller Hood Witch, which Dark Sky Films released onto digital platforms today.

The film “follows a single mother Nour and her son. Nour makes a living from smuggling exotic animals and illicit products (birds of prey, venom, rare roots, etc.). Wishing to get her son out of the city and offer him a better future, she designs and develops a mobile app that connects clients and marabouts. It’s a success, but a patient’s consultation turns into a tragedy and Nour has to face a wave of violence that could cost her and her son their lives.”

Golshifteh Farahani (Extraction, Extraction 2) stars as Nour. Amine Zariouhi, Denis Lavant, Alexis Manenti, Karim Belkhadra, and Issaka Sawadogo also star.

The film, which premiered last year at SXSW, marks the feature debut of emerging French director Saïd Belktibia. Belktibia co-wrote Hood Witch with Louis Penicaut.

A mind-bending sci-fi horror movie directed by Grammy winning artist Flying Lotus (V/H/S/99, Kuso), Ash is now playing in theaters from RLJE Films and Shudder.

Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) star in the sci-fi horror film alongside Iko Uwais (The Raid), Beulah Koale (Shadow in the Cloud), Kate Elliott (“Xena: Warrior Princess”), and Flying Lotus. Jonni Remmler wrote the film.

On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion (Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive.

Nate Bolotin (The Raid, Mandy) and Mathew Metcalfe produce, while filmmaker Neill Blomkamp (District 9) serves as an executive producer. Expect it on Shudder later this year.

Stakeout, a short film starring Seth Gilliam (“The Walking Dead” and Sonja O’Hara (“Doomsday”), follows detectives tracking a serial killer in a world secretly overrun by vampires. Deadline reports today that a feature adaptation is on the way.

The short film’s stars, Gilliam and O’Hara, are both returning for the feature film. 

Stakeout follows “a pair of detectives tracking a brutal serial killer.” The horror thriller is planned as the first of multiple features set in a crime-ridden world suffering from a hidden vampire epidemic.

The crime thriller with a supernatural twist is directed and written by Micah Khan (The Zombie Wedding) and written by Khan, Victoria Diana, and David Wappel. 

“Everything under the sun has already been told before,” Khan stated. “So I want to go into the shadows to unfold new tales. It’s the perfect place to vent my fears about the future, each time told through the myopic eyes of a mortal battling immortals in the night fog. And although we’re playing with monsters in a familiar genre, under the hood we’re dealing with the quiet secrets that ail us in the real world.”

Gilliam is likely best known to horror fans as Father Gabriel Stokes in AMC’s popular series “The Walking Dead.” The character was initially introduced in season five and most recently appeared in spinoff series “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.” O’Hara earned an Emmy nomination for her work as star and creator of millennial cult miniseries “Doomsday.“
