In The Assessment‘s not-so-distant future, where resources are scarce and tightly controlled, even the dream of having a child is not a given.

The sci-fi thriller opens in theaters on March 21 before hitting Digital on April 8 from Magnolia Pictures.

Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander, and Himesh Patel star with Indira Varma, Nicholas Pinnock, Charlotte Ritchie, Leah Harvey, and Minnie Driver.

Music video director Fleur Fortuné (Drake, Pharrell Williams) makes her feature debut from a script by Mrs. & Mr. Thomas and John Donnelly (The Pass).

Mia (Olsen) and Aaryan (Patel) are one of the few couples allowed to take a mysterious assessment for the right to have a child, having successfully navigated a brutal selection process. Desperate to prove themselves eligible, they face their evaluator, Virginia (Vikander) —cold, unpredictable, and impossible to read.

Subjected to seven grueling days of challenges, Mia and Aaryan are pushed to the brink. The trials unravel into a psychological nightmare, forcing them to face their deepest insecurities, shaking the foundations of their relationship and what being parents really means to them.

A US-UK-Germany co-production, The Assessment premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.

David Howard Thornton (Art the Clown in the Terrifier movies) shrinks down to the size of a mouse to play public domain icon Steamboat Willie in the horror movie Screamboat, which has received an official trailer this afternoon along with a theatrical release date.

Screamboat will be released only in theaters on April 2, 2025 from Iconic Events Releasing. A digital and home video release will follow at a later date from DeskPop Entertainment.

In the film, “Be our guest on a NYC ferry ride that turns into a hilarious nightmare when a mischievous mouse named Steamboat Willie becomes a monstrous reality. As passengers set sail, their trip turns deadly when the tiny terror unleashes murder and mayhem.”

The team promises, “Packed with big kills, big laughs, and a miniature menace, Screamboat is a cinematic thrill ride that re-imagines Steamboat Willie like never before!”

From the producers of Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3, Screamboat is written and directed by Steven LaMorte (The Mean One). Christian Beckman‘s Quantum Creation FX, Inc. (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) created the creature from designs by concept artist Christian Cordella (Spider-Man: No Way Home).

The cast includes Allison Pittel (Stream), Amy Schumacher (The Mean One), Jesse Posey (Selena), Jesse Kove (Cobra Kai), Kailey Hyman (Terrifier 2), Rumi C Jean-Louis (Hightown), Jarlath Conroy (George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead), and Charles Edwin Powell (The Exorcist III), with cameos from Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Brian Quinn (Impractical Jokers), and stand-up comedian Joe DeRosa (Better Call Saul).

In Demon City, now streaming on Netflix, “Just as hit man Shuhei Sakata is about to clean up his act for his family, the mysterious organization Kimen-gumi murders his wife and daughter, pinning the blame on him and sullying his name. After being shot in the head, he miraculously survives but falls into a coma.

“Twelve years later, the Kimen-gumi attacks him again, but his dormant killer instinct awakens, setting him on an epic course of revenge. However, what awaits him is a truth that threatens to completely alter his destiny.”

Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola is a favorite here on Bloody Disgusting, making a name for himself with the Dead Snow zombie comedies and then going on to direct Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, The Trip, and the Christmas action thriller Violent Night. Up next from Wirkola is something a little different: the adult animated sex comedy Spermageddon.

Directed by Tommy Wirkola and Rasmus A. Sivertsen, Spermageddon is being released in theaters in Norway this weekend, and we’ve got the trailer featuring English subtitles.

Wirkola tells BD, “Really excited to finally set Spermageddon loose and see how audiences around the world take it in. It’s been an insane journey—now the real fun begins!”

Here’s the official synopsis: “Two narrative threads – one is an emerging love story between two awkward teens, Jens and Lisa, who are having sex for the first time and the other is an eventful quest of Simon the Semen and his friends to reach the golden goal, the Egg.”

The Norwegian voice cast for the film includes Askel Hennie, Nasrin Khusrawi, Bjorn Sundquist, Mathilde Storm, Christian Mikkelsen, and Christian Rubeck.

The Hollywood Reporter called the film an “outrageously raunchy animated feature,” one that seems “destined for cult status.” Watch the trailer below for a taste of the rated “R” madness.

THR’s review notes, “But Spermageddon is a weird movie — and one whose open-minded politics, whether about teen sex or the benefits of birth control, likely would never pass muster in the U.S. but seem right at home in Scandinavia. That said, the film feels entirely American with its slick 3D animation style and comic hijinks.”

Hulu has unveiled the official new trailer for Control Freak, an original horror movie starring Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi actor Kelly Marie Tran as a woman afflicted with a demonic parasite.

Control Freak debuts exclusively on Hulu on March 13.

The logline for this psychological thriller is straightforward, simple, and effective: “A motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head.”

Watch the new trailer below, which introduces the start of the parasitic affliction. Intriguingly, the trailer withholds any full glimpse of the entity, though the creepy, crawly new poster below might give us a better look.

In Control Freak, Tran plays  “Valerie, a woman whose life spirals into chaos due to this inexplicable and relentless affliction.” Opposite Tran, Miles Robbins (Daniel Isn’t Real, Halloween) plays “her on-screen husband Robbie.”  Toan Le rounds out the cast as Valerie’s father, Sang, with Kieu Chinh as Aunt Thuy.

The  WorthenBrooks and Hulu Original horror movie was written and directed by Shal Ngo (The Park, “The Box”), expanding his 2021 horror short “Control” featured in the second season of Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween. That means that Control Freak joins WorthenBrooks’s expanding slate of horror features for Hulu, which includes titles like Appendage, The Mill, Clock, Mr. Crocket, and Carved.

Producers include David Brooks, Arbi Pedrossian, Jenna Cavelle, and Shaum S. Sengupta, with Miles Alva serving as executive producer.

Control Freak arrives next month on Hulu before heading to Disney+ internationally at a later date.
