So here’s a weird one. It was reported back in December that Austin Butler would be playing the role of Patrick Bateman in a new movie adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho for director Luca Guadagnino (Suspiria, Challengers), but those reports are now being disputed by none other than Bret Easton Ellis himself.

On a recent episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, the writer of the original American Psycho suggested that Austin Butler hasn’t actually signed on to play Patrick Bateman in the new American Psycho movie. In his own words, he suggests the report is “fake news.”

“I have a feeling it’s fake news,” Easton Ellis mused. “I heard somewhere, from someone, that there are no contracts. Austin Butler hasn’t signed anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn’t have a deal. Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the screenplay, doesn’t have a deal either.”

The author continued, “From various sources that I have, this is just fake news that was put out there to see how an audience is going to react.”

“If it does exist, I am not involved,” he adds. “I have nothing to do with this. I might get some money if they do this, but I am not involved creatively on any level, and that is all I know.”

The original report about Butler’s involvement in Guadagnino’s American Psycho came courtesy of Variety back on December 11, 2024, a very reliable source for movie news. But Easton Ellis’ comments line up with recent comments made by reporter Jeff Sneider, who suggested that the announcement was “more about making Lionsgate look a little bit more attractive on paper as an acquisition target than it was about an actual movie that’s going to happen.”

Sony wasn’t done with their film announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show 2025. Along with revealing that a Helldivers film adaptation was in the works, Sony also dropped news regarding the film adaptation of Until Dawn. Per IGN, Ashley Brucks, president of Sony’s film division Screen Gems, stated that director David F. Sandberg‘s Until Dawn will respect the source material, but will feature a new story and cast of characters separate from the original game.

“The key to successful adapting these games comes down to one thing: respecting the source material,” Brucks said. “Our close collaboration with PlayStation Productions gives us and our filmmakers the advantage of working directly with the creators of the game.

It’s a careful balance of trying to identify and incorporate what the fans love about the game and the experience as well as offering something fresh and exciting to entice newcomers.” Brucks went on to say that Sandberg, who is a big fan of the game, “took the essence of what makes the game great and selected elements we think are the most important to the fans and paid homage to it in the right way.”

Actor Peter Stormare, who played Doctor Hill in the original game, and will play an unknown character in the film, said this approach works for dedicated fans and newcomers.

“I have been lucky to be part of Until Dawn since the original, incredible, super terrifying game, and what’s why I’m so excited to be part of this film, because the whole thing is a love letter to horror, and it completely honors the spirit of the game,” Stormare said.

“The movie is going to be full of fresh characters and victims in a brand new story loaded with twists, so whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, get ready for Until Dawn like you’ve never seen it before.”

Until Dawn will arrive in theaters on April 25. Alongside Stormare, Ella Rubin (The Idea of You), Michael Cimino (“Never Have I Ever”), Ji-young Yoo (“Expats”) and Odessa A’zion (Hulu’s Hellraiser) will star in the upcoming film, along with Maia Mitchell and Belmont Cameli.

Until Dawn centers around a group of eight teenagers who decide to vacation for a night in a cabin on the fictional Blackwood Mountain, exactly one year after the disappearance of two girls, the twin sisters of a member of their group. Shortly after arriving, the gang find themselves under attack by a psychopath, and must attempt to survive until sunrise.

Halloween Horror Nights did no favors to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Wolf Man this past Halloween season, with a costumed actor inside the park giving us a lackluster first tease of the werewolf design featured in the movie. It’s never a good idea for a movie’s character design to be revealed by a Halloween costume, and unsurprisingly, it didn’t go over well with fans.

That’s probably why Universal has made the decision, one week before the release of Wolf Man, to show off the whole damn werewolf with a clip from the movie that seemingly reveals all. The clip showcases the body horror transformation star Christopher Abbott undergoes after being bitten, while also giving us a good look at his fully transformed werewolf look.

It’s undoubtedly an odd choice to spoil so much so close to the movie’s release, but it’s likely that Universal is in a bit of a panic and trying to salvage the negative first impression of Whannell’s Wolf Man as we head towards the January 17 release date. In any event, you can watch the full transformation clip down below, which needless to say includes SPOILERS.

“With the look of Wolf Man, I knew I wanted to do something very different,” Whannell explains in a featurette video released earlier this week. “I was really inspired by movies like John Carpenter’s The Thing and David Cronenberg’s The Fly.” It looks like Whannell and his team ended up settling on a unique werewolf design that’s half-man, half-monster, rather than the more traditional hairy beast we’ve seen in movies like An American Werewolf in London, Dog Soldiers, and The Howling. Whannell’s take is more infection-based, with Abbott’s character looking like a true wolf-man hybrid. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Abbott stars in the new movie as Blake, a husband and father who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes. The plot synopsis further details:

After making one hell of a debut with the rape-revenge movie Revenge back in 2017, director Coralie Fargeat made her return to the genre with last year’s The Substance, which earned rave reviews across the board, pulled in $78 million at the global box office, earned Demi Moore a Golden Globes statue, and is now generating tons of Academy Awards buzz.

While we wait to find out if The Substance gets any Oscar nominations – those will be announced on January 17 – and while Fargeat basks in the glow of her second movie’s much-deserved Golden Globes win, the French filmmaker has teased her upcoming third movie in a chat with Variety. But it’s only a slight tease, as the project is in the early stages of gestation.

“For now I’m not discussing anything. I’m just enjoying the moment and taking some time as I really want to write my next project,” Fargeat explains. “It’s slowly starting to be put in motion in the back of my brain and when things calm down I’ll take it from there.”

She continues, “It’s going to be totally different [than The Substance] but with a lot of similarities. I love to make bold and surprising films with things that you don’t expect, so definitely that’s what I want to do. And I love the freedom that I gave myself for this film and that’s certainly something I want to keep doing.”

“That was the greatest thing for me on The Substance,” Fargeat adds.

One thing you should not expect from Fargeat is a sequel to The Substance. She told Variety in a recent chat, “The point of this movie is to bring fresh things to the world. No sequels, no prequels. I’m going to be so happy to bring something else fresh to the world in a bit.”
