Trap doesn’t have a traditional M. Night Shyamalan twist, but that doesn’t mean the movie doesn’t have more than a few tricks up its sleeve.

One of M. Night Shyamalan’s very best movies has experienced a slow reappraisal over the past few years, and the director is working on a 4K physical release.
M.F.A. writer Leah McKendrick has been set to write and direct a mysterious, folkloric Untitled Monster Project for Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures, Deadline reports this afternoon. You had us at “Monster Project.”
Of course, plot details are being kept under wraps but we do know that it centers around a mythical monster.
James Wan will produce the project with Michael Clear and Judson Scott executive producing. Alayna Glasthal is overseeing the project for Atomic Monster.
More recently, McKendrick penned the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot for Sony with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson attached to direct and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr in talks to reprise their roles. The film is currently slated for a Summer 2025 release.
This isn’t the only mysterious Untitled Monster project in the works from Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures either. Earlier this year, it was announced that Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin will next be directing an untitled horror movie for Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster described as a modern take on something ancient. That project is currently dated to release in theaters on April 17, 2026. So don’t expect McKendrick’s feature any time soon.
In Leah McKendrick’s powerful feature debut, 2017’s M.F.A., in which she also starred, “Noelle (Francesca Eastwood), an art student struggling to find her voice, is sexually assaulted by a fellow classmate. Attempting to cope with her trauma, she impulsively confronts her attacker, leading to a violent altercation that culminates in his accidental death. Noelle tries to return to normalcy, but when she discovers she is only one of many silenced sexual assault survivors on campus, she takes justice into her own hands. A vigilante is born – retribution is the inspiration she’s been waiting for.”
It’s the type of debut that signals this Untitled Monster Project is one to watch.

The Hollywood dream becomes a nightmare when The Fanatic stalks SCREAMBOX on August 9. Directed by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, John Travolta stars in the psychological thriller as a film buff who develops an obsession with a cult movie star (Devon Sawa, Final Destination).
RKSS (Turbo Kid, Summer of 84) introduces the living impaired in SCREAMBOX Original We Are Zombies on August 13. Based on the comic book series “The Zombies That Ate the World”, the horror-comedy has drawn comparisons to Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, and Warm Bodies.
A pastor seeks vengeance for his daughter’s murder in The Retaliators on SCREAMBOX August 23. It features appearances by hard rock luminaries Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe), Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach), Ivan Moody & Zoltan Bathory (Five Finger Death Punch), and Spencer Charnas (Ice Nine Kills).
SCREAMBOX Original The Funeral delivers a love story with bite on August 27. The Turkish slow-burner does for zombies what Let the Right One In did for vampires.
Every babysitter’s nightmare becomes real in When a Stranger Calls. Hitting SCREAMBOX on August 30, Carol Kane (Addams Family Values) stars in the 1979 masterclass in suspense from director Fred Walton (April Fool’s Day).
Other August highlights include British Academy Television Award-winning zombie series In the Flesh; The Call starring horror icons Lin Shaye (Insidious) and Tobin Bell (Saw); and female serial killer thriller The Girl Who Got Away.

Paramount Pictures is adapting Harrison Query and Matt Query‘s coming-of-age horror thriller novel Wilderness Reform, and they’ve enlisted the writing duo behind last year’s Knock at the Cabin to pen the adaptation, per THR.
Wilderness Reform will be penned by Steve Desmond and Michael Sherman, the screenwriters of M. Night Shyamalan‘s 2023 apocalyptic thriller, and produced by Lindsey Anderson Beer, who wrote and made her feature directorial debut with the horror movie Pet Sematary: Bloodline for the studio last year, through her Lab Brew production company as part of her first-look deal with Paramount.
The plot is “set in a wilderness camp for troubled teens and tells of a 13-year-old boy named Ben who is sent there as part of a reform program. Although the counselors are overly happy, a sinister current runs through the place. The boys Ben befriends seem to have unique skills, which is lucky, because the group is going to need all the help it can get in uncovering the mystery behind mysterious events and disappearances, and the evil lurking beneath the camp itself.”
Also producing is Scott Glassgold through his production company Ground Control.
The book has been described as ” having shades of classic Stephen King stories and dealing with themes of loss of innocence.” What’s interesting to note is the novel only published July 2, 2024, putting Harrison and Matt Query’s novel on the fast track to adaptation. The authors are also behind the critically praised 2022 novel Old Country.
