A24 has secured domestic distribution rights to an upcoming thriller titled Famous, Deadline reports today, which has Zac Efron (The Iron Claw) leading the cast in dual roles.

Jody Hill (Observe and Report, “Eastbound & Down”) will direct the film.

Deadline details, “The story follows Lance Dunkquist, who has one asset that’s about to change his life – he has the face of a movie star. And not just any movie star – Lance is the spitting image of a Hollywood icon, James Jansen. Lance is about to travel to Los Angeles to make his dream come true. Lance is going to be famous, no matter what it takes.”

Zac Efron is playing both Lance Dunkquist and James Jansen.

Famous is based on the novel written by Blake Crouch.

Chad Hodge (“Wayward Pines”) scripted the adaptation.

It was almost exactly five years ago at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 that Marvel announced they were inviting Blade into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a brand new reboot movie, with Mahershala Ali attached to star as the title character. Five years later, well, Marvel’s planned Blade movie has still never even found its way in front of the cameras.

It’s no secret that the brand new Blade movie has been bumped all over the release calendar the last couple years, currently set for theatrical release on November 7, 2025. But the movie is without a director at the moment, with Yann Demange (“Lovecraft Country”) departing the project in the wake of Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) exiting the film back in 2022.

In a new chat with BlackTree TV this week, fittingly ahead of San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige gives us a minor update on the Blade project.

The good news? Much like Deadpool & Wolverine, which brings a new level of violence to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it sounds like Blade will DEFINITELY be rated “R.”

“For the last few years, as we’ve been trying to crack that movie, the most important thing for us is not rushing it. And making sure we are making the right Blade movie,” Feige explains.

He continues, “There were some great Blade movies years ago… they were all rated R. So I think that’s inherent – like Deadpool – inherent with the character of Blade.”

At this time, Mia Goth (X, Pearl, MaXXXine) is also on board to star in the film.

The vampire-slaying character was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan, introduced in July 1973’s The Tomb of Dracula #10. Wesley Snipes played Blade across three films from 1998 through 2004, and he was played by Sticky Fingaz in a short-lived TV series.

Fresh off Bodies Bodies Bodies, A24 and director Halina Reijn are back together for Babygirl, an upcoming erotic thriller that’s set to world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

A24 has debuted a first look image this week. Find it down below.

This year’s Venice Film Festival runs from August 28, 2024 – September 7, 2024.

Nicole Kidman, Antonio Banderas and Harris Dickinson are confirmed to star after much speculation, while Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me) and Jean Reno round out the all-star cast.

Reijn wrote the screenplay and will also direct Babygirl.

In the film, “A successful CEO begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern.”

David Hinojosa of 2AM will produce alongside Reijn of MAN UP Film and A24, who is financing the project. Julia Oh, Zach Nutman and Christine D’Souza Gelb of 2AM will serve as executive producers. This marks the second collaboration between Halina Reijn and A24 after her satirical slasher Bodies Bodies Bodies, also produced by Hinojosa.

A24 also acquired Reijn’s directorial debut, Instinct.

A night shift in a rural, roadside diner transforms into a harrowing, rage-fueled siege in Last Straw, the feature directorial debut by Alan Scott Neal. A new trailer debuted today, highlighting the intense violence that breaks out.

Shout Studios opens Last Straw in select theaters, VOD, and Digital on September 20, 2024.

In the film, “A young waitress working the overnight shift alone at a rural, roadside diner finds herself in a fight for her life when she’s terrorized by a group of masked assailants. With no one to turn to, she will do everything she can to survive the night, even if it means striking back.”

It stars Jessica Belkin (“American Horror Story”), Jeremy Sisto (“Thirteen”, May, Wrong Turn), and Taylor Kowalski (“Snowfall”), with a script by Taylor Sardoni and original score provided by Alan Palomo (Neon Indian).

“Last Straw is an outlet for revealing what horror awaits when the mask comes off and, at the same time, an attempt to understand what causes some people to turn towards violence,”director Alan Scott Neal said previously. “When I first read Taylor Sardoni‘s script, I was creatively drawn to exploring the abhorrent, violent behavior that comes with the cultural clashes embedded in American society – while also making an entertaining thrill ride that grabs you and doesn’t let go.”

I wrote in my review, “Last Straw earns its title; its characters are fed up and reach their final breaking point, leading to a no-holds-barred night of carnage. Through a mean, lean horror thriller, Neal captures the current landscape of thinly contained fury constantly on the cusp of violence.” And, “It’s the unique narrative structure that not only leans into the prevalent feeling of rage but reframes the visceral violence that ensues.”
