Marvel made the huge announcement at San Diego Comic-Con tonight that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe… as iconic villain Doctor Doom!
Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, releasing May 2026.
The Russo Brothers will be returning to the MCU to direct Avengers: Doomsday, and they’ll also be directing Avengers: Secret Wars, which is already set for release in May 2027.
“What can I tell you, I like playing complicated characters,” Downey Jr. said at SDCC tonight. His version of Doctor Doom will be replacing Kang in both upcoming Avengers movies.
Doctor Doom (aka Victor von Doom) is a classic Marvel supervillain who first appeared in The Fantastic Four #5 back in 1962. Wikipedia reminds, “In his comic book appearances, Doctor Doom is depicted as the monarch of Latveria whose goal is to bring order to humanity through world conquest. He serves as the archenemy of Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four, though he has also come into conflict with other superheroes in the Marvel Universe.”
And yes, the Fantastic Four will also appear in both upcoming Avengers movies!

Ketchup Entertainment’s Hellboy: The Crooked Man has been described by its director as a folk horror movie, and a brand new trailer tonight leans heavy on those horror vibes.
The new trailer just debuted at Comic-Con. Watch it over on Variety now.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man is rated “R” for…
“Some violent content, language and nudity.”
Jack Kesy (12 Strong) is playing the iconic comic book character this time around. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola co-wrote the new Hellboy film with Christopher Golden.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man, which doesn’t yet have a release date, is “set in the 1950s and costars Adeline Rudolph (Resident Evil) as a rookie agent of the BPRD (the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense) who teams up with Hellboy to protect the residents of Appalachia from the creepy Crooked Man, who is collecting souls for the devil.”
Brian Taylor (Crank, Gamer, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Mom and Dad) directed the movie for Millennium, based on a Hellboy mini-series from 2008. The story is said to “expand Hellboy’s world through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series.”
Jefferson White (Yellowstone) stars alongside Kesy and Rudolph as Tom Ferrel, Leah McNamara as Effie Kolb, Joseph Marcell as Reverend Watts, Hannah Margetson as Cora Fisher, and Martin Bassindale as the Crooked Man, among others.
“The Crooked Man is a departure from all previous Hellboy films where Mike Mignola and the creator of the comics will finally shepherd an authentic version of his stories and characters in film form,” said Millennium Media’s President Jeffrey Greenstein. “This is the first in the series of films that will captivate audiences in familiar (and new) ways. Brian Taylor is an expert across the board, and I couldn’t think of a better person to bring this story to life to show our audience this different and original Hellboy slate of films.”
Millennium Media is producing the new movie alongside Dark Horse Entertainment.
