Up next from Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) is Bugonia, an English-language remake of 2003’s Korean genre-bender Save the Green Planet!, which has Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) attached to produce. THR has announced today that we can expect Lanthimos’ latest this year.

Focus Features will release Bugonia in theaters on November 7, 2025.

Bugonia will star Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

“The off-beat, black comedy-sci-fi mashup follows a man who believes the world is on the verge of an alien invasion and sets out to save the planet by first kidnapping his boss.”

Lanthimos’ latest movie is based on the South Korean sci-fi comedy, Save the Green Planet!, written and directed by Jang Joon-Hwan and produced by Sidus.

In the original film, “Byeong-gu believes Earth is on the verge of an alien invasion and that he’s the only one who can save it. With his loyal girlfriend’s help, he kidnaps and brutally tortures corporate execs and politicians he believes to be aliens in disguise.”

A complete genre mashup, from sci-fi to comedy to horror with paranoia and extreme violence, Save the Green Planet is full of shocking moments and unexpected twists.

Producers Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen previously said in a statement, “Swinging with youthful abandon between white-knuckle suspense, absurd slapstick, grim horror and a deeply felt (and earned) sense of tragedy, Save The Green Planet! is one of the most remarkable films to come out of South Korea – among this recent wave or any wave, for that matter. When we heard that director Jang was passionate about revisiting this iconic work, bringing it to the US and updating it to reflect the mess of the world today (which feels even more ripe for this kind of apocalyptic skewering than when the film was first released), we leapt at the chance to be a part of it. We’re honored to be partnering with CJ and with the brilliant director Jang.”

Described as a “musical horror-thriller,” Variety reports today that the upcoming movie Art of a Hit has been acquired by Giant Pictures for 2024 release here in North America.

The film “follows a ’90s rock band frontman grappling with irrelevance. An eccentric producer invites the band to his French chateau to record, where they encounter unexpected challenges.”

“Art of a Hit takes everything we love about the late ‘90s and early 2000s rock scene and jams it into a wildly creepy castle in the most beautiful place on earth: Dordogne, France. It’s funny, scary, messed up and honest — a story about what it’s like to be in a band and the insane fears of trying to make it as an artist. If you love late 90s rock, if you loved being in a band, you will love Art of a Hit,” director Gaelan Draper and co-writer/star Charlie Saxton said.

Ryan Donowho (“The O.C.”), Charlie Saxton (“Hung”), Tim Jo (“This Is Us”), Rob Raco (“Riverdale”), James Earl (“White Men Can’t Jump”), Allie MacDonald (“What/If”) and David Valdes (“Last the Night”) star in the film, featuring an original soundtrack by Jets to Brazil.

Giant Pictures is planning to release Art of a Hit on streaming this Fall.
