What’s going on with the Friday the 13th franchise? The saga has been on hold for several years now due to a messy legal issue, but Jason Voorhees is finally set to return in a brand new series from Bryan Fuller, A24 and Peacock titled “Crystal Lake.” It’s coming soon, possibly even later this year, but what about a new installment in the feature film franchise?

For what it’s worth, Jason Blum is still trying to make something happen in that department. Blum has been saying for years that he wants to bring the Friday the 13th franchise into the Blumhouse family, and it sounds like he hasn’t yet given up on those hopes.

Speaking with Collider just this week, Blum once again expressed an interest in getting his hands on Jason Voorhees. Blum told the outlet, “[Friday the 13th] is not a Blumhouse project, but I’m trying to will it into being one. It’s just a piece of IP I’ve always loved.”

Blum went on to say, “And James Wan and Atomic Monster are very passionate about it, and I think we would have them shepherd it for us. That would be a lot of fun.”

Blumhouse and James Wan’s company Atomic Monster just inked a massive merger at the start of this year, the two companies forming “a mega house of chills and thrills.” So it’s not out of the realm of possibility to imagine Blum and Wan working together on a Friday the 13th movie down the road. But as Blum notes, it’s little more than a pipe dream at this time.

Meanwhile, Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to their aforementioned series, with “Crystal Lake” being described as an “expanded prequel” to the original Friday franchise.

Jonathan Liebesman, who directed remake prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning back in 2006, is attached to direct a werewolf movie for Platinum Dunes titled Wolf Night, and Deadline brings us the first word on the project this afternoon.

We don’t yet have a plot synopsis for Wolf Night but the script from writers Will Honley and April Maguire is said to be “District 9 by way of The Purge –but with werewolves.”

Multiple studios are said to be bidding on the Wolf Night package as we speak.

Michael Bay and Brad Fuller will produce for Platinum Dunes.

Jonathan Liebesman’s directorial credits also include Darkness Falls (2003), Rings (2005), The Killing Room (2009), Wrath of the Titans (2012), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014).

Will Honley recently wrote Escape Room: Tournament of Champions.

We seem to be in the midst of a full-on werewolf movie resurgence, with films including Steven C. Miller’s Werewolves and Larry Fessenden’s Blackout headed our way this year.

First up, Vinegar Syndrome’s March 2024 lineup includes the 4K UHD debut of the landmark horror anthology and Amicus classic, Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors from 1965.

The March package also includes Specters (1987), Singapore Sling (1990), Story of a Junkie (1985), and Goin’ South (1978), while Nightbeast (1982) gets a VHS release.

Vinegar Syndrome further details, “We’re getting in the Halloween spirit 7 months early with the 4K UHD debut of director Freddie Francis’ landmark horror anthology and Amicus classic, Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965), newly and exclusively restored by VS from its 35mm camera negative and overflowing with an array of archival interviews and other exciting extras. Moving two decades on, we’ve paired a duo of devilish supernatural horrors from director Marcello Avallone with his South American set shocker Maya (1989) paired with the equally fiendish Specters (1987), starring Donald Pleasance! Both films have been newly restored from their camera negatives and come packed with an abundance of new interviews. And rounding out the VS offerings is easily one of the more twisted films we’ve had as of late, with Nikos Nikolaidis’ landmark of Greek genre cinema, Singapore Sling (1990). And then there’s the company’s partner labels, with 14 NEW TITLES put up for grabs this afternoon. They include films from the labels Film Archive, Art Label, Canadian International Pictures, Dark Star Pictures, Deaf Crocodile, Dekanalog, and Enjoy the Ride/Toons.

The new partner label collection includes Huesera: The Bone Woman (2022), Scalper (2023), Severe Injuries (2003), and The Last Slumber Party (1988), to name just a few.

It’s hard to imagine today but there was a time when Wes Craven was having trouble securing the funding to make A Nightmare on Elm Street, which has of course gone on to become one of the most iconic and beloved horror movies ever made. Enter Duncan Eagleson, an artist Craven and New Line approached to create a pitch poster for the film… before it was made.

Duncan Eagleson was approached in 1983 to make the pitch poster based only on Craven’s script, and various versions of that original artwork have appeared over the years; particularly on international posters for A Nightmare on Elm Street. But that original piece that Eagleson whipped up in the early ’80s has now surfaced, and it’s currently up for auction!

Hake’s Auctions explains the piece, “To help secure financing, [Craven and New Line] decided to create a striking visual aid in the form of a pre-release movie poster. Self-trained painter and former graffiti artist Duncan Eagleson (whose career has included designing book covers as well as creating movie posters and comic book art, illustrating a single issue each of Vertigo’s flagship titles – Shade, The Changing Man and Sandman) was contracted in 1983 to use Craven’s script to create the original art offered here.”

The auction site’s official listing continues, “Huge 27 x 40″ one-sheet poster size illustration board has image area measuring 25.5 x 38.5”. Acrylic original art w/airbrushing elements depicts peaceful dusk scene on suburban street. All appears calm, but a glance at the approaching night sky reveals three large, curved metal claws slashing the sky, leaving ragged tears in their wake. Eagleson has signed his initials and added “83” date at lower left.

“While most horror fans will note Freddy Krueger’s iconic razor glove has four blades, it is depicted here w/three. Discussing the origins of Freddy’s glove with the American Film Institute in 2014, Craven mentioned cave bears and the terrifying effect they would have no doubt had on primal man. This inspiration is clearly evident in Eagleson’s depiction, which features a more clawlike, curved design than what is seen in the final film as at the time of painting, there was no visual other than what Craven’s script mentioned.

“While not used for the final US movie poster (the actual release poster art was crafted by Matt Peak, son of noted movie poster artist Bob Peak), Eagleson’s art was used in various newspaper ad campaigns before completion of the final poster design. It was also published as movie posters in France, Yugoslavia and Germany (albeit with the art flipped) and was even used for the 20th Anniversary release poster, in which a shadowed silhouette of Freddy was added at bottom center. The claw portion of Eagleson’s art was also utilized separately on lobby cards, stills, other foreign posters and on the German presskit.”

The auction for this one-of-a-kind piece of horror movie history is now live through Hake’s Auctions, and it’ll be coming to an end on Wednesday, March 20. How much will it cost you?
