‘Ghoulies’ – Original Creators Planning a New Trilogy for a New Generation!

Empire Pictures’ lovable cult classic creature feature Ghoulies went on to spawn a four-movie franchise that ended with 1994’s Ghoulies IV. That means we haven’t seen or heard from the franchise in almost 30 years, but the original creators are now determined to bring the tiny rubber monsters back to life – and it seems they’ve reclaimed the rights to be able to do it.

Director/Co-Writer Luca Bercovici and Producer/Co-Writer Jefery Levy have reclaimed the domestic rights to their 1984 cult classic film, a press release has informed us.

The plan? They want to “develop a new film trilogy for a new generation”!

We’ve been told that two of the scripts are already complete, with the third one halfway complete at the time of this article being published. “We are shopping it now and hoping to film in late Summer/Early Fall,” writer/producer Theo Lemasters tells Bloody Disgusting.

The press release explains, “Drawing upon their unmatched expertise and unwavering passion, Levy, Bercovici, and Theo Lemasters are set to unveil a series of projects that will keep audiences wallowing in filthy horror fun for many years to come.

“The team is expanding the Ghoulies universe beyond the silver screen with a book series that will plunge readers into the darkest depths of the Ghoulies universe.

“Fans can look forward to bringing home a piece of the Ghoulies universe with an exclusive line of figures, apparel, and collectibles for every devotee of the delightfully demonic Ghoulies.”

From we gather, Bercovici and Levy were able to reclaim the rights to the original Ghoulies thanks to the same copyright law termination provision that allowed original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller to make his way back into the franchise he helped create. Under the Copyright Act of 1976, “Authors may recapture rights from publishers after waiting a prescribed period (usually 35 years) and sending a notice within a five-year window.”

The Ghoulies… they’ll always get you in the end. Stay tuned for more.

SYFY Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day 2024 With an All-Day ‘Leprechaun’ Franchise Marathon

You can always count on SYFY to program the Leprechaun movies for St. Patrick’s Day, and we’re happy to report that this year is no exception. SYFY will be airing an all-day Leprechaun Franchise Marathon for St. Patrick’s Day once again, taking place on Sunday, March 17!

The good news? They’re showing ALL 8 MOVIES throughout the day, including 2018’s Leprechaun Returns. The bad news? As always, the movies are playing out of order.

The Leprechaun franchise kicked off with Mark Jones’s original horror-comedy in 1993, which was followed by five Warwick Davis-starring sequels, a reboot, and later Leprechaun Returns in 2018. Even though Leprechaun Returns was a sequel to the original movie, Linden Porco took over the role of the title character, played by Dylan Postl for Leprechaun Origins.

Here’s the full schedule for this year’s marathon…

Sunday, March 17, 2024:

  • 1:30am – Leprechaun
  • 9:30am – Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood
  • 11:32am – Leprechaun V: In the Hood
  • 1:37pm – Leprechaun 4: In Space
  • 3:42pm – Leprechaun III
  • 5:47pm – Leprechaun II
  • 7:47pm – Leprechaun
  • 9:47pm – Leprechaun Origins
  • 11:40pm – Leprechaun Returns

Monday, March 18, 2024:

  • 1:40am – Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood
  • 6am – Leprechaun II
  • 8am – Leprechaun III

There will soon be a ninth installment for SYFY to add to the rotation in the coming years. Lionsgate is rebooting the franchise with a new movie from director Felipe Vargas.

On a related note, Meagan Navarro highlighted The 10 Best Kills in the 8 Film Leprechaun Franchise back in 2020 here on Bloody Disgusting. Check that out if you missed it!

Gravitas Ventures is back this week with the new movie The Woods Are Real from director Alix Lambert, and the film was released onto Digital outlets on Tuesday, March 12.

The film is said to put “a folk horror twist on the story of Job.”

“Joba and Quincy are a privileged, fiercely progressive Brooklyn couple – they buy the right things, donate to the proper foundations, and march for every just cause. But when their friend, Caleb, returns from a country pilgrimage challenging their bleeding liberal hearts, Quincy is initially skeptical. But when Joba insists they take up an invitation to the same off-grid spot, they are met by a kitschy cabin in the woods peppered with analog devices of a simpler age: a rotary phone, religious iconography, an Edison machine.

“And when a curiously labeled record plays a menacing message, Joba and Quincy rapidly learn that their bank accounts have been drained, their digital records erased, and their family businesses are collapsing. They try to flee, only to grow more enveloped by the woods. With nothing left but the clothes on their backs, the couple find themselves trapped in a spiritual test of survival.”

Matt Dellapina, Campbell Scott, Chinasa Ogbuagu, Nick Westrate, Jeffrey Omura, Kathleen McElfresh, Teresa Avia Lim, Laura Esposito, Tasha Milkman, Eli Hanson, Rebecca J. Sawchuk, and Nicole M. DeLuca star in The Woods Are Real from director Alix Lambert.

In the film, “Reclusive gym manager Lou falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Las Vegas in pursuit of her dream. But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.”

Kristen StewartKaty O’Brian (“The Walking Dead”), Dave Franco (“The After Party”), Ed Harris (“Westworld”), Anna Baryshnikov (“Dickinson”) and Jena Malone (“Goliath”) star.

A visionary thriller from director Thomas Cailley, Magnet’s The Animal Kingdom drops us into an extraordinary world where mutations in human genetics cause people to transform into hybrid creatures. Think Clive Barker’s Nightbreed meets modern arthouse cinema.

Magnet will release the film in theaters and on VOD Friday, March 15.

Watch the official trailer for The Animal Kingdom below. From acclaimed director Thomas Cailley, the film world premiered as the opening night selection of Cannes Un Certain Regard.

In The Animal Kingdom, “François (Roman Duris) does everything he can to save his wife, who is affected by this mysterious condition. As some of the creatures disappear into a nearby forest, François embarks with Emile (Paul Kircher), their 16-year-old son, on a quest to find her with help from a local police officer (Adèle Exarchopoulos).”

As Ella’s mind starts to fracture, the characters in her animated film take on a terrifying life of their own, and the unleashed power of her imagination threatens to destroy her.”

A24 Bringing ‘Hereditary’ Back to Theaters; Remastered in Never-Before-Seen IMAX!

Three of A24’s most popular movies are headed back to theaters in never-before-seen IMAX as part of a new monthly screening event, the company has announced this afternoon.

A24 x IMAX Present: Hereditary, Ex Machina and Uncut Gems remastered!

The screenings begin on March 27, and you can get tickets now.

The first in the series, Ex Machina, will be followed by an exclusive sneak peek of director Alex Garland’s upcoming Civil War. Those screenings take place on Wednesday, March 27.

Hereditary follows on April 24, followed by Uncut Gems on May 22. Tickets for those two movies aren’t yet available, but they’re coming soon. Keep your eyes locked on A24’s website.

Ari Aster made an impossible-to-ignore arrival on the scene with Hereditary in 2018, and we celebrated the acclaimed horror movie’s fifth anniversary here on BD just last year.

Ron Breton wrote, “Hereditary offers a similar emotional resonance to this new generation of horror – my generation of horror– as movie-goers in the seventies when they first saw Exorcist. Much like Aster’s film, we see the incomprehensible evil wear the face of a young girl; the victim of a raw deal she had no say in, as it tears a family to its core. Sure, both films offer so many terrifying visuals that can make the hair stand up on anyone’s neck – but it also depicts intense relationships and emotions that are tangible. Real. Familiar.”

“In that familiarity lies the uncanny, ready to rear its ugly head and force us to confront thoughts and horrors laying dormant and clawing at our psyche,” Breton continued his 5th anniversary celebration of Hereditary. “And it doesn’t matter if it’s been five or fifty years. These horrors are always there, as we become pawns in its horrible, hopeless machine.”
