The teaser trailer for Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus gave no indication about where this particular story takes place in the greater timeline of the franchise, but we do already know that the movie is set sometime between the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens. We know this because Cailee Spaeny revealed that tidbit a few months ago.

But is this a standalone story or can we expect direct connections to the events of those two movies? Alvarez provides some fresh insights in a new chat with IGN this afternoon.

Alvarez explains that while Alien: Romulus will work as a standalone Alien movie for anyone not familiar with the previous films, longtime fans will be getting a richer experience.

And it sounds like he’s not erasing ANY other movies from the continuity.

“The way this movie works is if you haven’t seen any of them, you’ll have a blast,” Alvarez explains to IGN. “But if you have, I’ve been saying you’ll be that person in the theater that won’t shut up, just talking to the person next to you going like, ‘This is from that movie and that’s from this, and [they said] this because of that reason.’”

He adds, “And you’ll pick up on a billion things that connect with the other movies story-wise, technology-wise and character-wise.”

“We went to crazy extents to make sure that things were in canon and we were not contradicting or messing, I would say, any of them,” Alvarez continues. “It’s just something very special when you love certain movies and then a movie comes in and makes nods to them and you feel you’re the only person in the theater who must be getting this reference. That’s what it feels like. It’s really tailor-made for you. That’s my goal for the true fans out there, that they will have the experience they’ve been waiting for.”

Alien: Romulus will be released only in theaters on August 16, 2024.

Talk to the dead; pay the price. “The Witcher” star Freya Allen learns that the hard way in supernatural horror film Baghead. And it’s heading exclusively to Shudder soon.

Baghead will debut on Shudder on April 5, as part of their annual “Halfway to Halloween’ celebrations.

“Following the death of her estranged father (Peter Mullan), Iris (Freya Allan) learns she has inherited a run-down, centuries-old pub. She travels to Berlin to identify her father’s body and meet with The Solicitor (Ned Dennehy) to discuss the estate. Little does she know, when the deed is signed, she will become inextricably tied to an unspeakable entity that resides in the pub’s basement–Baghead–a shape-shifting creature that can transform into the dead. Two thousand in cash for two minutes with the creature is all it takes for desperate loved ones to ease their grief. Neil (Jeremy Irvine), who has lost his wife, is Iris’ first customer. Like her father, Iris is tempted to exploit the creature’s powers and help desperate people for a price. But she soon discovers breaking the two-minute rule can have terrifying consequences. Together with her best friend Katie (Ruby Barker), Iris must battle to keep control of Baghead and figure out how to destroy her, before she destroys them.”

Alberto Corredor directs the full-length feature adaptation of his indie short Baghead, produced by STUDIOCANAL and The Picture Company.

“Baghead is a tale of family secrets, the depths of grief, and the things best left undisturbed in the basement,” said Corredor. “I’m so excited to share this film with US audiences when it debuts on Shudder.”

Ruby Barker, Ned Dennehy, Peter Mullan, Jeremy Irvine, Saffron Burrows, and Svenja Jung star alongside Allen. The screenplay is written by Christina Pamies and Bryce McGuire; based on the short film written by Lorcan Reilly.

The Picture Company partners Alex Heineman & Andrew Rona, who were also behind the short film-turned-feature Come Play, produced alongside horror veteran Roy Lee (It, The Ring, The Grudge, The Turning, Godzilla), who executive produces.

Christina Pamies and Bryce McGuire wrote the script.

Producer Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity, Insidious) is headed back into the genre arena with Boyfriend, a film being directed by Anne Hamilton (American Fable).

Deadline reports today, ” Real Estate mogul Doval Bacall is set to finance producer Steven Schneider’s next feature film Boyfriend as his first significant entertainment deal.”

Marlon Chapman wrote the original screenplay.

Deadline details, “The movie tells the story of an intrepid young woman who, obsessed with finding her sister’s abductor, fashions herself into his next victim to uncover the truth.”

“I am honored to get to work with Steven on this very commercial feature with someone who has mastered a very lucrative genre,” Doval Bacall said in a statement.

Producers on the project will also include Paul Coy Allen of Midas Entertainment, with executive producers including Shelley Browning (Magnolia) and Stuart Manashil (Novo).

We don’t know much of anything about Disney’s first Alien movie at this time, with Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) in the director’s chair for the upcoming Alien: Romulus.

What we do know is that SOMETHING – a first look trailer, we assume – is headed our way tomorrow (March 20), as Alvarez has taken to Twitter to put out a cryptic teaser tonight.

Alvarez tweeted out the word “Tomorrow…..” on what appeared to be a blank background, but lightening up the image reveals a special surprise treat in the form of a Xenomorph!

Alien: Romulus is currently set to launch into theaters on August 16, 2024, but aside from the title, the main cast, and a short synopsis, we have no idea what to expect from the film.

On that note, star Isabela Merced (HBO’s upcoming “The Last of Us” Season 2) teased in a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter that at least one scene is going to gross us out.

“When we were doing reshoots, Fede Álvarez gave me the iPad where he watches playback, and he had the movie pulled up. So I told him I wanted to see parts of it, and he showed it to me,” Merced told the outlet. “I was the one holding the iPad, and there were ten people around me watching it on the iPad. So there’s a scene that I’m in, and they all had to turn away. Not one person stayed looking at that iPad because it was so disgusting. I was so excited.”

According to star Cailee Spaeny (The Craft: Legacy, Pacific Rim Uprising) in another chat with Variety, this year’s Alien: Romulus takes place in between the first two films.

The project has been described as “an original standalone feature,” one that “will focus on a group of young people on a distant world.” Spaeny leads the cast alongside Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu.

Fede Alvarez co-wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues (Evil Dead). Ridley Scott is on board as producer for the film, the first movie in the franchise to be released by Disney.
