This is not the type of movie we typically review, but since it deals with horror (in the most
general use of the term) I'll let it go.
I went to see Scary Movie with no expectations, and it didn't let me down. First of all,
the theater was packed with a bunch of high school yahoos who wouldn't shut up, so I could
not hear the movie very well, not that I missed much anyway. This movie is supposedly a "spoof"
of the teenage horror genre, but it just didn't work. If I was thirteen then this might have
been a great "movie": the bathroom humor was just horrible, and the sexual innuendos were so
excessive that they weren't even funny.
Brief synopsis: take Scream, Scream 2 and I Know What You Did Last Summer and jam them together,
then try too hard to be funny, and you have Scary Movie. Right from the opening scene with
Drew Decker (Carmen Electra) running from the killer scream face, to the wassup tv commercial
rip off, the movie was not funny or original. [Editor's Note: Anything that uses the
"wassup"
thing is not funny or original, but rather lame and painful-the same goes for people who
actually use it in public. Scary indeed!--JO] I can't really reveal the plot if I wanted to,
because there wasn't one. It was a mix of a bunch of current horror movies, with David L. Lander
(Principal Squiggy) thrown in for a cameo: there you have the movie.
Mel Brooks did it right with Young Frankenstein, as it was a parody which could also stand
on its own. The Wayans brothers did it wrong. Hell Idle Hands was a better movie and
that's not saying much. It was a Scary Movie alright; it's scary that I paid to go see
it.
